I am trying to register for the July 20 TOPIK, but something seems really strange.
Online, they list two levels of test, TOPIK I and TOPIK II.
TOPIK I is about 20% full at every testing facility
TOPIK II is 100% full at every testing facility.
The registration period just opened Monday!

But maybe I am reading this wrong, because there should be three levels of test, not 2, so maybe I am misunderstanding something...

I have passed level 3, and am going for level 4 now, although I am rusty and really don't expect to pass level 4.

Can someone take a look at the website and see why there is TOPIK I and II now instead of 3 levels? What would I take if I passed level three before. Is the TOPIK II really entirely full in Seoul and Kyongyi while TOPIK I is 20 % full (great planning TOPIK geniuses!)

Any advice?
Thanks,

The TOPIK test has been reworked, and for some unfathomable reason, the intermediate and advanced level tests have been collapsed into a single test. This is probably why the level 2 test is completely booked: everyone who wanted to take either intermediate or advanced will have booked that test.

On the other hand, if you do extremely well on the new level 2 test, you could shoot straight to level 6 I guess? Hope you've practiced you're writing, since evidently the new writing section now has no multiple choice questions at all and instead relies purely upon what you can write by hand. There's also evidently no grammar section, just reading (50 questions), listening (50 questions), and writing (2 fill in the blanks, 2 essays).

OK thanks, I just registered for the level II in Jeju - Do. I was planning to take a trip there this summer anyway.

I can't say I mind the new format (except for combining levels 3, 4, 5, 6 into one test, bazaar!). So much of the writing was just the same as the reading and was just the same as the grammar. Sounds like they just got rid of some repetition.

I hope some of the previous tests were the same format so I can practice a bit.

Thanks

Strange and Korea go together like Jam and Peanut Butter. You ought to know that by now.

Anyways, what's with combining it? If you get a 20% score, you're a level 3? If you get a 100% score, you're a level 6?

Wow...

That was quick. The last test had a huge spike of applicants as it was the last time they offered the old version. I was hoping to write this summer as well. Maybe I'll have to make a trip of it.

Anyhow, it is worth writing this time if you're aiming for a particular level. They haven't set the cutoffs yet, so they will be a bit more flexible.

The reading and listening sections are pretty identical to the old test, just a lot longer--50 instead of 30 questions. Reading has also absorbed some of the old writing/grammar/vocab questions.

It doesn't make any sense. Intermediate was the most popular test of the 3, and it's been totally absorbed into advanced. It doesn't look like they've accounted for it at all. They have (what would have previously been) two groups writing one test, but have the same number of seats as the previous advanced tests.

Right. Every time I've taken it, the advanced was in the morning and the intermediate was in the afternoon, presumably because if they didn't split it up over time, they wouldn't have had enough seats. Well, now they dont' have enough seats. I guess the lesson is clear though: henceforth if you want to take the high level test, you'll need to book it as soon as registration opens up.

The schedule was made that way to allow people to take the lowest/intermediate levels OR the intermediate/advanced levels on the same day.

As of 2014, TOPIK is given 5 times in Korea and twice abroad. The upcoming exam in July is the third this year (being offered in Korea only) - and the first of the new format.

In one of my prep books it says that if you got 39 Writing 60 Listening and 62 Reading for a total score of 161/300 then that would be equvalent to a pass at level 3.

That's how the old scoring system worked. The new one doesn't require minimum scores in particular sections apparently.

No it is an approximation of what you need, the old scores weren't out of 300.

I dont know how accurate it is, but it was designed to give you a rough idea of where the boundary would fall. Just over 50% for level 3 seems like it would be correct.

Should have split 1-2-3 / 4-5-6. If the beginner one is 20% full and advanced one 100% full then there's a problem.

Just for future reference the levels for the new TOPIK I & II test have been released.

It seems you only need at least 50% in each section to get level 4 and level 5 would only require at least 64% in each section. Much better than the old system it seems.

Can anyone recommend a good study guide for level 3 or 4? I need one with a cd to practice my listening and prepare for the types of exercises they will have.
