A soldier who deserted his post after fearing disciplinary action for bullying his subordinates injured four civilians in two separate traffic accidents, authorities said Saturday.
The incident comes after the death of an Army conscript who was repeatedly bullied and assaulted by senior comrades in April sent shockwaves across the nation and has led to calls for major reform of barrack life.
The Army corporal, identified only by his family name Lee from the 6th Artillery Brigade, commandeered a 5-ton truck from his base and collided with a bus in Yeoncheon at 8:15 p.m. Friday, slightly injuring two passengers.
He sped away from the accident and ran into a small passenger car 10 minutes later near a bridge that resulted in two other people being hurt, one seriously.
Lee then continued to drive the truck for another five minutes before he drove off a bridge and fell five meters. He was slightly injured and apprehended by military police and is receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Investigators said Lee, who worked at the unit's vehicle depot, was waiting a summons by a disciplinary committee for verbally abusing a fellow soldier.
They said that psychiatric tests showed he was not handling barrack life well and was treated for mental instability.
Military police said they are determining the exact reason for his escape and other factors that may have contributed to his desertion.
Sorry Cpl Lee. Driving off a 5 meter bridge isn't going to send you to your happy place. |

This incident seems to encompass much of what is being discussed on this board--terrible driving, soldier suicides, Korean hell, and because he was unable to complete his mission, Korean military incompetence and lack of productivity in Korea in general.
I must say, however, he does score a few points for taking the initiative in stealing a truck, although he couldn't really expect to escape unnoticed in such a vehicle. Or, given the state of the Korean military, could he? |

Waiting for Steelrails to chime in. There is no way he will be able to let this slide. Unless, UM or that other fellow jumps in to cover it. |

How can we find a way to blame America and the U.S. Military for this? |

How about the movies Full Metal Jacket and Jar Head that showed authentic, true to life actions of drill sargeants? They weren't condemned by the US military and Koreans couldn't help copying them, didn't they? How 'bout that? |

Eh. The 5 ton truck is your standard 5 ton utility vehicle. An artillery base like the one the guy was a part of would have around 40 of them.

Seeing that he worked the motor pool, he would have a ton of options to take the thing out for a spin. The big question is how he shook the NCO who usually accompanies a conscript driver. |

Tons of guys drove around by themselves when I was in the Army. Probably wasn't that hard. |

A better question: Why isn't the anti-US/anti-SOFA crowd out there protesting that this soldier's going to be tried by a military court instead of a civilian court? |

Given the small land size, cameras everywhere, folks being nosy, etc, I really don't think you can hide for long or run too far here. There's no rocky mountains, build your own log cabin, carry a couple of shotguns, and go off the grid ability here compared to back home. (Not saying that would be easy as you'd have to be a pretty stellar outdoorsman to pull it off.) |
