I am really surprised how little talk there has been on Dave's this week - other than a thread on World Cup babes and some inquiries on where to watch it has been really quiet.
Since I am off work this week I have been fortunate to see a lot of the broadcasts live, and there has been some incredible action so far, and some dreams dashed much earlier than expected. Should be plenty to talk about.
How about Spain, who suffered the humiliation of being the first reigning champions to be knocked out of the World Cup after just two matches.
How about the performance of Luis Suarez of Uruguay, coming back to score two goals less than 5 weeks after surgery to stun Wayne Rooney and England?
Or that incredible header by RVP of the Netherlands? Or the defensive gem turned in by Mexican Goalie Guillermo Ochoa? Or the fantastic goal by Messi of Argentina?
And what about Brazil? Did they get some home-cooking from the refs in their win over Croatia?
How about the USA finally beating Ghana- Ghana - who had vexed us in the last two World Cups?
Again, there should be plenty to talk about, or brag about, or vent about..... |

I don't think many people were stunned by that result to be honest. We are the third best team in that group and if we play well in the next match we might finish in that position. Other more searching questions will no doubt get asked such as how come a country with a population of less than 4 million is better at football than the country with a population of 50 million, that invented the sport and has supposedly 'the best' league in the world. But those kinds of questions have been asked on a regular basis since I can remember, without any satisfactory answer ever being given |

"Might" is the key word, and they will have their work cut out for them. Costa Rica just upset Italy, after having defeated Uruguay in their first match. |

| I have to wonder if these Latin American teams are performing better than their European counterparts in part because of the heat/humidity. English boys aren't used to playing in such conditions. |

Whatever the reason, no European team has ever won a World Cup played in the Americas. |

It's been said that New York City can be a tough place to be a professional athlete, as the press there will eat you alive if they feel you are under achieving. From what I have read, it seems like the same thing can be said about the English sport writers as well. They are just as relentless, if not more so. The Italian media is not far behind. "Baked and eaten," says La Gazzetta dello Sport, after Italy's loss to Costa Rica. Some of this stuff is really well written, and if it wasn't for the pain, would be a pleasure to read.

When the USA plays in Azteca stadium in Mexico City, the Mexican fans urinate in plastic bags and throw the piss bags at the American players. Slurs are nothing. |

That's right! I had forgotten about that.
That was definitely hardcore, but I think the reasoning behind it was their hatred of Landon Donavan, who apparently had urinated on a Mexican field during training back in 2003. They were also chanting Osama, Osama.
