Hello,
I was once an ESL prospect and had all my paperwork, an acceptance letter from EPIK and was 5 months away from getting on a plane and heading to korea. However I received a job offer from a company here in the states which was for a decent sum of money and the ability to go to korea in a few years.
A year later and the time has come.
I am 23, will be turning 24 next year and its been my whole goal to get to Korea. I will be running business operations on Osan Air Base and Kunsan Air Base for this company I work for.
Since I will be running both bases, I will need to go to both places probably once or twice a week, checking up on operations, etc. So I need to be able to head to both places.
However the reason I am asking for help is because, I honestly have no idea which base is better to live closer to, Osan or Kunsan.
I would like to know which would be cheaper to live closer, but I do want access to all the flavors of korea, rather then having a high density of american geared korean culture from which I hear is directly outside of these bases. I will probably enjoy and benefit from the nightlife culture and wish to close to it, without sacrificing distance to work.
Finally, after I have a list of places, are there any people I can call, or any websites which will help me have a listing of places to rent when I get out there, so I can check prices, and see these places before I fly in blind? I am having SO much trouble getting good on the ground intelligence about both of these areas and the local processes and procedures.
Any help and insight would be appreciated.
EDIT: After some review, I am learning towards more Osan, due to its location closer to Seoul, where I am assuming all the magic happens. Nothing is close to Busan. |

So, to summarize, you are looking for the best location for easy access to K-poon? |

You went above my intellect with "I am 23, will be turning 24 next year" |

From what I've heard, Kunsan (also pronounced and written Gunsan) is mostly a training base. They are also in a perpetual state of war. Heard some US army folks actually preferred Iraq as they did their six months and then got out, whereas Korea was a year or more of constant training. An American base (in America) or Ramstein (Germany) is most preferable to soldiers.
At any rate, Osan probably has more to it (as far as things to do) and might be a bit more relaxed. Daves is not the bast place to ask these questions as it's filled with English teachers and not US Army. But, I've passed on what little I've heard. You may want to see if there's any other way to find out from soldiers directly. |

You're working for Uncle Sam and soliciting advice on an ESL cafe? Why? Ask ANY current or prior service member who has been stationed here and they'll probably be able to give you a better answer. Your life here, hugely insulated compared to teachers living on the economy, will be pretty cushioned.
I'd go with Osan |
