Hi there everyone,

I am planning to teach in Korea next year, and I see that many people use recruiters to find a position at a hagwon. I was interested in EPIK but I think I will probably make more money at a private hagwon anyway, so I think that's my plan. I was just wondering how recruiters for these positions work-- do you pay a recruiter somehow, or do they get paid by schools? Also, how do you find one? I have one person who is a mutual friend of mine who lives in Korea who is looking out for a job for me, but essentially I've heard so many horror stories that I'm really trying to hardest to gather as much information as I can.

Thanks!

Recruiters get paid by the schools to basically find them the youngest, blondest, prettiest female they can. Especially true for hagwons, as u said thats what you're aiming for.

Most recruiters dont help u at all. They are paid by the schools, not you. They get about 1,000,000won if you finish your contract smoothly. So,again, they want young gullible pushovers who wont challenge anything or anyone.

There are options though, if you are male or over 30.
Apply to public programs directly, epik, gepik,.JLP
Or join the FB groups of the city you want and find someone advertising for their replacement.
Or,many schools are doing in house recruiting now so if you see a post that says apply directly, do that.

Of course, if you are 20s female, North American, recruiters will be extra nice to you. So, it just depends.

I did luck out a little bit with respect to being a young, pretty female, but I am happy to say I am not a pushover, and I have every intention to know all of my rights as a foreign worker, and the laws that will protect me as well. I also was wondering a little bit about TEFL, because I'm not sure if that will help my chances at all, as I am already a young, stereotypically attractive female!

In that case, you'll have plenty of offers. Dozens.
Don't bother with a tefl, esp. for a hagwon.

1 million is the low end of the range. It's usually closer to 1.5 million (and sometimes up to 2 million, but rarely).

They get paid either in one lump sum when the teacher arrives, or in installments over a period of 3 to 6 months. Which of these arrangements the recruiter has will play a large part in whether the recruiter will try to help you out after you arrive (and for how long she'll help you). Still, they'll mainly just try to convince you to stick it out a little longer. (Guess how long he'll recommend you try to stick out.) Maybe he'll try convincing the school owner to be more friendly or pay on time.

So, the best tactic for hogwon jobs is to just apply to as many recruiters as you possibly can find. For EPIK jobs, you can only apply to one recruiter but the recruiter can't really help you get the job you want. He can only get you A job just like all the other recruiters. So it doesn't matter much which you use.

Warning about camps. They say it is 6 hours but actually it is more like 8-9 because you have to be there for breakfast , lunch and dinner w/o any break at all .
