Did you ever think we'd see this in Korea?

E-Mart Everyday, a chain of 165 smaller-scale stores that operates under the umbrella of Korea’s largest retailer, $9.4 billion E-Mart, collaborated with USMEF-Korea recently on a contest among the chain’s meat department employees to see which store could sell the most American beef. The competition, supported by the Beef Checkoff Program and E-Mart Everyday’s own sales promotions, featured chilled U.S. chuck eye roll, top blade, rib finger, hanging tender, brisket point and short plate.
Prior to the competition, U.S. beef accounted for 4 percent of E-Mart Everyday’s beef sales. During the contest, U.S. beef sales rose to 70 percent of overall beef register rings. And the contest is proving to have staying power: post-contest U.S. beef sales at the chain are hovering at 25 percent, a six-fold increase over pre-contest levels.
"This is the kind of result we strive for," said Jihae Yang, USMEF-Korea director. "Our first goal is to raise awareness among consumers who may not be familiar with U.S. beef by getting them to try it. And by promoting a variety of cuts that have different price points and can be utilized in local dishes, we give customers a reason to keep coming back – and stores a reason to keep promoting U.S. beef."
The sales competition graded the E-Mart Everyday stores on total U.S. beef sales, sales growth, and the share of U.S. beef versus competitors in the imported meat section. Staff at the top three stores received E-Mart gift cards.
The meat department staff at E-Mart Everyday stores did not have much interest in U.S. beef before the competition, reports Choi Hunyoung, meat buyer for the Korean chain. Australian beef has dominated the market in recent years, in part because of its longer shelf life. The sales competition has helped change the opinion of store employees, and Choi believes this will result in an ongoing greater presence of U.S. beef in the chain’s stores. |

Stupid. Should be discouraging all beef consumption. Cattle farming is a global environmental blight and certainly does not need to be encouraged. |

Do they still inject US cattle with growth hormones? The EU banned US beef for a while because of this issue. |

What was stupid about my claim? Are you disputing my assertion that cattle farming is having a major negative impact on the environment, or just insulting me as a knee jerk reaction against an idea which threatens your lifestyle? |

I have no doubt it's having some sort of impact...but it's the beef industry. Good luck with that. No one cares about that liberal arts hippybabble, though. |

Ha ha. Eat more beef!!
Seriously, if cows were all released into the wild, they'd all be killed by other wild life pretty quickly. They are too domesticated to ever return to nature. Eating beef in moderation is perfectly fine to me so long as they are treated humanely throughout most of their life. Maybe we could boycott veal as it's a cow sitting in a small "cell" with a tube in their belly. The body does need protein and iron. Can't eat tofu or bugs to get it all the time. Not the same.
Just wish Peta and these other groups would be more moderate and say smaller amounts of beef. Would prob be better for everyone's health. But, damn, I do love a good Canadian barbeque in the summer. |

The beef industry has a massive impact on the environment.
In terms of tree felling to clear land for grazing, use and pollution of water, release of methane and over all degradation of land. |

I am not labouring under the illusion that I'm going to bring down the beef industry by complaining on this website. I do feel, however, I should be able to express my disapproval of an industry which is documented to be causing large scale harm to the global environment without being smeared as "stupid" and a babbling "liberal arts hippy".
Perhaps nobody here cares, but then I'd ask you to reconsider who's "stupid". |

What is the brilliant solution though? Humans should stop eating red meat? |

Exactly. Nothing constructive, just incessant worn out rhetoric. |

I don't want to fight Sister Ray's battle for him/her, but what's the problem with stating a fact. Everyone should just shut up and enjoy the headlong plunge into the abyss of environmental destruction?
Shit needs to change. Will it? Invaribly not. Most people have the same attitude as you. But why is it that people who choose to speak out about it are told to shut the *beep* up? That's pretty weird.
How constructive can one be in the face of attitudes like yours?
"Cut down on beef. It's bad for the environment."
"Hahah shut up hippy fag lol". |
