My family pointed out recently that, while I have the national Korean health insurance as a teacher, if I were to be injured seriously enough to preclude fulfilling my teaching obligations, I'd be pretty screwed.
In a foreign country, critically injured, facing the massive costs associated with being repatriated during a medical emergency. Which is a scenario I hadn't previously given much thought.
So I'm curious, what is your health insurance situation? |

Good to see this post. Most people on E2 visas don't have insurance other than the NHIC. I quickly got 'other' insurance when I came ten years ago. Of course the decision to get it or not depends much on age. I was older, and it seems like most young people, i.e. under 30, believe they are going to live forever without the need of medical care. IMHO
It only takes ONE accident to wreck a lifetime of goals, hopes and dreams. |

I'm on the National Health Insurance Program along with my wife and we have a supplementary accident and injury insurance from Hyundai.
We pay 300k per month in total between us on Insurance..
It is quite a lot but better to be safe than sorry!
170k- Government
130k- Hyundai Insurance- Covers a good bit.

At least you have some insurance.
I guess the claims from members like "ontheway" that the majority of hagwon workers have NHIC seems to be somewhat untrue with some 44% on this survey being uninsured.
I have NHIC for my time in Korea (I am not here full time) and full cover 24/7 for everywhere on the planet excluding the US with BUPA. It includes accident, emergency, repatriation, outpatient (including meds), and inpatient. It does not include dental (other than accident). There is no co-pay providing the limits are not exceeded.
Their service has been pretty good and I have never been out of pocket in Korea or elsewhere in Asia for medical costs. My BUPA coverage is paid for by my other employer (outside of Korea).

Looks like we have a lot of IC (independent contractor) people here. I'm sure this is how ontheway would explain this situation. |

I have NHIC plus additional insurance partially paid by my school (we had a choice whether we wanted to get it or not), but it only covers bigger emergencies (hospital stays, surgeries, etc) |

So over half of people who polled are not medically insured..
Quite an indictment there.
It is illegal to not have insurance but beyond that the risks that people are taking are massive.
We ve all seen the horror stories relating to not having cover.
Employers and Employees alike have a responsibility here.
Paying full insurance was a big factor in getting a very low interest Jonsei loan so there are other benefits than just more peace of mind etc |

If you die, you won't need your savings. |
