The WSJ apparently is even writing about the racism in South Korea (can someone point me to the article mentioned in the Chosun ilbo article on the same subject below?)

racism in the modern Korean society arose in the 1950s. |
Really?
Has the author read the voyage of hendrik hamel and any number of other documents from the previous centuries? |

Im not entirely sure why you're posting this stuff?
Excuse me for saying this, but Koreans are at the best of times, quite transparent (maybe you just wear your heart on your sleeve more than most other cultures?).
My presumption therefore, is that you are deliberately trying to provoke a racist discussion - against Koreans, to appease some agenda or other. Possibly to report it to some source, for example another forum?
Either that or you really care what happens to us all here (which I seriously doubt unless you've lived in another country and experienced racism and decided that after all, you can now empathise, and will return home and fight the fight)?
Anyhow, thanks for keeping us posted |

If Korea were smarter, they'd mask their racism better. It seems blatant here.
I think they have as much racism here as western countries do, but here is a lot easier to get away with it despite the gov't making policies and laws to stop it. |

The stories "example" which it uses to condemn Korean society is the JR Pub incident. Which glosses over the fact that no other business there did such a thing and that foreigners continued to patronize the place before, during, and after the sign was posted.
They should use things like statistics, not anecdotes if they're going to make this claim. There's a case to be made, but this was a poor way to do it. |

Korea is trying to address racism (민족주의) however due to the belief in blood and that the world can be divided into Korean (한국인) and foreigners (외국인) they really don't have much hope. This was demonstrated when so called Christians were able to stop an anti-discrimiation bill being passed.
Fortunately I was able to leave Korea but with a Korean wife and daughter I still have to visit. I am immdiately put in my place by having to separate from my wife and daughter at immigration despite holding permanent residency here. In Australia my wife could use the Australia Citizen's line even on a tourist entry because she's family. It's made perfectly clear to me here that I am not. My wife's Korean family register makes her look like a single mother of a bastard because my name only appears typed on the bottom if I request it each time.
According to the article I'm one of the lucky ones because I'm from a developed country. |

Id put my neck out and say there is as much 'x' (insert anything negative) as there is in any countries working class/upper class (people that are either less educated or leaning toward ignorance) - unless they smoke pot, listen to Bob Marley and are therefore enlightened... |

Isn't that because the bill would have outlawed discrimination against homosexuals? If so, it doesn't really say anything about Korean racism. |

That was the excuse given but Christians only make-up 29% of the South Korean population. I'm sure some of this 29% have read past Leviticus.
The reality is some so-called Christians used homosexuality and they were used by the politicians to hide the reality of 민족주의. |

I said there is as much racism here as there is in western countries. I know that western Canada has had a huge influx of immigration in the last 10 or so years and people are getting more vocally disgruntled. I have not heard the N word spoken outside of rap music for so many years, as well as other slurs about middle easterns, etc.
Yeah it's an anecdote and not evidence per say, but it is a reality.

I'm not condoning racism but to compare Canada to Korea is overlooking the law.
1. Canada has laws that aren't inherently discriminatory like the family registration laws here that deny the non-Korean sole wage earner tax deductions on rent or mortgage payments beacuse they aren't the head of family.
2. Canada has anti-discrimination laws. In Korea we have to rely on finding a prosecutor prepared to uphold ratification of CERD as a local law by means of article 6 of the Korean Constitution. Then we'd need a judge to form the same view.
Racism is vile but when practiced by the state it is worse. |

Oh yawn, again with the racism talk??
Humans evolved tribal (in small bands of 20 or so) and thus are suspicious of people from other tribes due to their religion, skin color, cultural beliefs, etc. It has been this way for millions of years and it won't change.
Yes Koreans are racists, and you people are a bunch of racists too. Next! |
