Miller had moved to South Korea around four years ago and, according to KCNA, developed “inveterate hostility” toward the North while living unemployed in Seoul. Yet the report that runs to almost 1,200 words insists his nefarious plot wasn’t the action of a lone, crazy man but rather from someone who was sent by the United States to spy. And state media insists Miller is hardly an isolated case, as the United States is constantly violating the country’s sovereignty.

It sounds like he taught English and went by the name of "Preston Somerset".

Quote:
Neighbor Carol Stewart said Matthew Miller first traveled to South Korea about four years ago to visit a brother stationed there with the U.S. Air Force. He found work teaching English and learned Korean, Stewart said in a July 1 interview. She has since declined to comment out of respect for his parents' wishes.

"He liked it a lot, and he's been there ever since," said Stewart, describing Matthew Miller as the shy one of the four brothers.

SEOUL - Matthew Miller, the U.S. citizen imprisoned in North Korea on espionage charges, spent months in South Korea pretending to be an Englishman named "Preston Somerset", acquaintances who met or worked with him said.

Maybe, but he comes from a high-achieving family and is described as 'extremely intelligent', the norks probably recognized that he is a smart kid and automatically thought he was spying for the U.S. and they might even be right.

It's foolish to believe that dude will ever see the inside of a North Korean labor camp. He will be housed, employed, and treated exactly the same as every other American prisoner has been.

lol

Only an american would think that any english person could bear the name "Preston Somerset".

They're place names. Looks like the guy looked at a map of England and chose the first words he saw.

Its like saying "I'm American! My name is "New York Detroit"!

That guys a fool. He knowing crossed into North Korea, fully cognizant of the likely consequences, and is now pissed off that "my government" is making maximum efforts to get him released. Let him due his jail time as a warning to any other idiots out there who might try the same thing. Same goes for that missionary guy. They knew full well what they were getting in to. Just like those idiot missionaries who went to Afghanistan a few years ago.

Idiots. All of them.

Agree, idiots for putting themselves there to begin with. I think the gov just considers them unsalvageable.

I read an account here

According to U.S. officials, 7,245 Americans were captured or interned during the Korean War. Of these, 2,806 died in captivity, 4,418 were released to the U.S., and 21 refused repatriation and chose voluntarily to go live in the People’s Republic of China (more on this later).

Upon their return to the United States, they were considered traitors and followed by the FBI for months. This was in the 50s and 60s. They had to go before a senate hearing to be cleared to get jobs.

Here's another very long read about the two CIA paramilitary guys that spent 20 years in Chinese prison cells until Nixon acknowledged that they were CIA in the early 70s. Very long read, the CIA took good care of them and their families during and after their internment.

Being extremely withdrawn often gives that impression I suppose.

Americans tend to use surnames as first names. But this guy seems to have gotten mixed up between Kelly Preston and Somerset maugham. I doubt he's even visited England.
