For the good of the industry, please do not consider this position (BPA Korea):
http://worknplay.co.kr/korea-jobs/203995/2-qualified-teachers-needed-in-bundang

-No housing, pension, severance, health insurance, airfare

Salary:
-Starting: depends on qualification: Minimum 2.5mil
-Negotiation depends on previous workplace, degree, etc.

Working hours:
Monday -Friday: 2:00PM-10:00PM
Saturdays: 12:00PM-6:00PM

(And for this you "Must speak conversational Korean.")

A salary of 2.5 without benefits is bad for a public after school job, let alone a Monday through Saturday job. Top brand my behind. KEEP LOOKING.

I'm pretty sure taking 1/5 of the first three months paycheck:
a) Breaches article 22 of the Labor Standards Act, Prohibition of Compulsory Saving (강제 저금의 금지); Source: http://www.law.go.kr/lsInfoP.do?lsiSeq=122686#0000

b) Tells you everything you need to know about the treatment of employees, that they need to hold money to keep people.

They take out 1/5 of your pay, then after you complete the contract they double it? So your final check will have 2/5 taken out?

No, they obviously mean that they'll give you back twice as much as they took out. So you'll end up getting 3/5 of a paycheck extra at the end of the contract. But what about severance!!!

If anyone is desperate/foolish enough to take this job, and somehow finishes a contract, please note that you can go to the labor board and demand a full paycheck's worth of severance pay. This "three-fifths compromise" might be a ploy to make the teacher think the academy is covering its severance obligations, so that the teacher won't go to the labor board.

So on top of the laughable conditions, and the flagrant disregard for enforceable laws about severance pay, "Best Prep Academy" may play tricks on you. Avoid!!!

You are also "guaranteed a year employment". So what happens if you are just a continual screw up?

No, it says in the qualifications part, "Guaranteed stay of at least one year." It was obviously not written by a native speaker, and it obviously means they want a teacher who will stay a full year. Nothing wrong with that part.

I'm glad you share my opinion, but your comments aren't very smart, and will just distract people from the real problems. I hope Best Prep Academy Korea has a hell of a time getting teachers.

I bashed the place pretty hard, but I will point out that the "minimum" is 2.5, and they ask you to state your desired salary in the application. It's discouraging that they'd consider paying as little as 2.5, but maybe they're flexible and ready to pay a lot more. I can't imagine they'd willingly offer a decent deal, though.

so they take 500,000 per month for the first 3 months to hold as a midnight runner deposit. So a teacher working here for the first 3 months will be working 48 hour weeks for 2,000,000 minus taxes, with no housing or benefits.

They say they double the held amount, so they will give you back 3,000,000 (1.5m net). That's still less to the severance an employee is legally entitled to.

this position is worse than the typical 9-6:30 jobs looking for newbies, offering 2.1 + housing. And they are looking for an experienced teacher to take the bait.

Don't think of that as severance. The school basically makes you pay half of your 'severance'.

This job blows donkey dick, but I have seen worse. The other day, a Skype teacher that pays $7-9 for a 25 minute lesson.

2.1 and housing for a 9-7 kindie and elementary academy in Dongducheon.

The second job you described isn't as bad as this BPA job I saw. With no benefits, 2.5 will change to 2.1, max, IF you have 10 million won to put down for key money, and are willing to live in a shoe box or commute from a cheaper area (Bundang isn't cheap). If you want a nicer or more convenient room, or don't have the key money, you'll be under 2.0. And for all the hassle you get to work 6 days a week.

Maybe the academy structures the contract so that the pay is just lower the first 3 months, and the extra 6/5 of a month's pay you get at the end covers the academy's severance obligations. Also the deposit makes you less likely to bail on them. (Hmm, why would they worry about that?)

As I said, maybe they're willing to offer a lot more than 2.5, but I don't have a good feeling about the place.

Yeah you are right. I forgot bout the great cultural experiences you will have in Dongducheon, drinking soju with the locals. And you will have lots of energy after working a 10 hour day chasing around kindie brats.

I never said the job in Dongducheon was good. I said the one at BPA is even more pathetic. I explained why. If you're too mathematically challenged to understand my argument, please refrain from posting.

I am not mathematically challenged. You are unable to see anything except numbers.

As far as pay goes, you are right. That is the only thing you are right about. I would still take the 2.5 job if I had to choose between the two.
