I am interviewing for a position north of Busan where one of the “benefits” of the job is that I can live in Haeundae and commute to work (about 45 minutes).
I’ve been to Haeundae many times and always loved it. I love the beach, the trail around the rocky point, and the cool breeze. But I am not sure if living there would really be nice or not. Once away from the beach, it didn’t seem that great for living.
The things that are important to me are:
- walking path near apartment (stream, park, or small mountain)
- shopping nearby (homeplus, e-mart, or lotte mart)
- foreign food choices
- transportation junction nearby (subway, major bus junction)
The things that are not important to me:
- bars (I am 50 and don’t drink)

The closer city to the job would be JeongGwan new town. I think JeongGwan is 20 minutes away from the job and Haeundae would be a 45 minute commute.
So, my question is, if I don’t live right on the beach, is Haeundae still a nice place to live? Or is it just crowded, and inconvenient once you get off the beach.

I lived in Haeundae and commuted out to Gijang. I'm familiar with Jeongwan as well.

Haeundae is a great place to live and better a little away from the beach. Walking towards Jungdong subway station it turns into normal neighborhoods after a few blocks.

Haeundae shindoshi is a planned "new town" but has a more organic feel than other big planned living areas (Jeongwan for instance).

There are a lot of nice walking paths and you're close to Jang-san for hiking.

There's an emart at Jung-dong station. Homeplus on the other side of the beach. Costco isn't far but is a pain to get to without a car.

The only reason I would choose Jeongwan over Haeundae is if I had a couple kids and wanted a larger, cheaper apartment in a quiet area.

Thank you, that was very helpful. I never knew about a Haeundae new town area, it looks really nice. My commute would be a bit further than Gijang, just across the border. It does look like that Jung Dong area would be much better than Jeongwan.
