Hi guys and girls,
I'm currently in Korea on a H1 working holiday visa, I've decided I quite fancy teaching after settling in (was originally unsure on how I'd find it). Is it possible to change to a teaching visa without leaving the country? I've bought my degree copy with official certification. How hard would it be for me to swap over? Do recruiters consider people already living in Korea or is it a big disadvantage? I don't mind working in a private academy. I've had some experience in the past but not in Korea.
Many thanks for any advice. |

Hi Joe,
Sorry, can not help with your question though I do have one of my own. Can I ask how you organized your working holiday visa? I was planning to fly in on a tourist visa in December, and secure contractual employment in March. But am now wondering whether a working holiday visa might be preferable as could then pick up a bit of casual work in the interim.
Cheers,

2nd answer first. The availability of the H1 is dependent on your age (under 30) and country of origin.
They are usually based on reciprocity (Aus lets Koreans do the working holiday so Korea allows Aussies to do the same).
It is not an option if you are American since there is no reciprocity (Koreans can't get a working holiday visa for the States so Americans can't get one for Korea).
As to changing an H1 to an E2 the answer is No, NOT USUALLY.
Typically, by the time an H1 holder wants to change status their documents are out of date (the CBC is more than 6 months old at the time of application).
That said, IF you have the proper documentation in hand (degree with apostille, CBC (less than 6 months old) with an apostille) AND you are in Korea on an H1 AND you want to change your status to E2 it should be possible without the visa run
BUT
Most recruiters and most employers are not familiar with the process so for them it is just easier to process a visa confirmation number and send you on a quick run to Osaka (at their expense) to get a new E2.
It's not as though the cost of the visa run is coming out of your pocket.
