This is a pretty intriguing idea:
Quote: |
Sheriff John Rutherford said the Halo system prevents crashes before they happen. The same company that operates the city's red-light cameras is installing them.
If a driver were to run a red light, the technology would stop the light from changing green for the traffic that's about to go. And once the red-light runner goes through, everything would be back to normal.
According to the National Safety Council, nearly one-third of all deadly crashes at intersections happen because someone runs a red light. That's why the city is trying to make its dangerous intersections safer. |
Seems like a good idea and since the camera is there as well, that should stop those drivers who might take advantage of the new system to run reds instead of stopping.
Seems like a no-brainer for busy intersections in Korea.
Get out those benchmarks! |

Sans cameras all Korean traffic lights would remain permanently red. |

What they need is the smart light system. It's really annoying when there isn't a car waiting at the intersection and the light turns red and goes through the whole cycle. It's no wonder that people run red lights here. |

The wait does often seem interminable. Most anything to mitigate that would be welcome. |

Also, all the lights on the street are linked together, so that they all change signal at the same time. So when you make a left turn onto the next street you have to wait again at the next stop light. I didn't realize how much time you have to wait at lights here until I went back home for a visit. It shouldn't take me 10 minutes or more to drive 1 mile. |
