I am of to Japan in 3 weeks for a week long trip. I have been a couple of times before but that was only for the visa run. I am just wondering about a couple of things. First off, how much should I be expecting to pay per night in a run of the mill motel? Secondly, how do I get the best out of Japan in one week? I would be most grateful if you could help me out with these questions.

In my experience, love motels can be between about 3000 - 8000 yen a pop. A business motel cost me 10,000yen a night.

Have a Japanese friend show you around.

If not, just do what you'd do in Seoul.

You should know from your visa runs that the best way to get the "Best" out of Japan is simple: research!

Don't mind me, but when I went on a four-day visa run to Japan (Osaka) I didn't do much research and it kind of screwed up my visit. I couldn't find any western friendly bars and everything was so expensive. I did stay at a hostel and that was kind of cool, but really wish I would have got a Lonely Planet.

By the way, Japan is cool! Way more liberal than Korea. Gotta love those Japanese girls. So damn cute! Wink

Hotels: business hotels for 5000-8000 yen a night, one popular chain is Toyoko Inn. There English website is decent and you can reserve online. Hostels are cheaper, but still 2000-3000 yen per night.

If you want to visit several cities, I recommend buying a JR Railpass, which allows you to travel on practically all trains and some buses for 1 week (also the bullet trains, except the Nozomi line if I remember correctly). It's not cheap, but trains are expensive in Japan. You can ONLY buy it outside of Japan, not sure where you can get it in Korea but I guess any travel agency should be able to help you or at least point you in the right direction.

For all Japan travel info I recommend the JNTO website.

Have fun!

We had a joke in Japan about the ruling Liberal Democratic Party that it was neither liberal, democratic or a party.

Japan has to be one of the most uptight and conservative nations I've ever lived in. Liberal (by which I take it to mean you imply open-mindedness) really didn't figure highly on my list of adjectives that best describes Japanese.

At least that was my take after six years there and I was just interested in how qualified you were to comment and how your experience differed from mine.
