interesting thing i heard about on the joe rogan podcast.... thermogenesis...
http://www.livestrong.com/article/154168-how-to-lose-weight-with-cold-showers/
Overview
Losing weight with cold showers is possible, according to the 2008 study, "Human Skeletal Muscle Mitochondrial Uncoupling Is Associated With Cold Induced Adaptive Thermogenesis." This means that human brown fat tissue can increase fat burning in response to cold temperatures. One simple way to do this is to take cold showers. The confirmation of human brown fat is official, but the science of enacting it is still theoretical. Researchers do not know how much weight you can lose with this technique, but it may accelerate metabolism more than diet and exercise alone. Follow a few simple steps to lose weight with cold showers.
Step 1
Get into the shower and turn on the water to your preferred temperature. Start with warm or hot water if you like and complete your activities including washing, shampooing and conditioning.
Step 2
Turn the shower knob to the half way point between the coldest water and your preferred showering temperature. The water will be cool, but refreshing at this temperature. Let your body adjust slowly as the water runs.

Step 3
Adjust the water temperature again, turning the knob half the distance to the coldest setting. This water will be much more brisk and maybe a little shocking, but stick with it. Let the water run over your body for 30 to 60 seconds until you adjust to the temperature. Your body will already have started using brown fat tissue to generate heat.
Step 4
Brace yourself and turn the shower knob all the way to the coldest setting. For a short time this water will be shockingly cold, but that is the point of the cold water. Staying under the cold water, let it run over your shoulders, neck and back. These are the areas where the majority of human brown fat is found, according to the May 2010 "TIME" magazine article by Alice Park, "Study: Scientists Find a Way to Trigger Fat-Burning Fat."
Step 5
Remain under the cold water for at least 30 seconds, says "Sneaky Weight Loss Tricks" author Jeff Anderson. By this time your body will have adapted somewhat and it will not feel as cold. You may find it refreshing. Stay under the cold water as long as you like, but make sure you do so for at least 30 seconds.
Step 6
Repeat these cold showers two to three times per day to further activate brown fat cells. While humans do not have extensive amounts of brown fat, according to German scientist Stephan Herzig in the "TIME" article, you would need to activate only a small portion of brown fat to make a meaningful impact on your overall metabolism. |

Indeed. I haven't tried that, but...
I read a study about the metabolic increase associated with drinking ICE COLD WATER. So, I plop ice cubes in with freshly squeezed lemons and water every morning, drinking over a dozen icy glasses a day. I've lost 31 kg since the beginning of May.
Other metabolism-boosters: green tea (hot or cold), cocoa, hot peppers, optimum vitamin and mineral consumption (broccoli, yogurt, and high-protein foods), sleep (!), exercise in the morning, a tan (the sunshine vitamin D), avoiding fasting (eat something every couple of hours), hydration (lots of water).
I have done all these things the last few months (after looking at the scientific research rather than blogs and nutritionist advice) and the weight has just melted off of me! (Of course I also consume no added sugar nor carbohydrates other than those from veggies and dairy - that helps huge) |

highlighted the key words basically meaning this Scientific study is inconclusive
i always end my showers w/a cold blast of water but not to the point described above
if you have the time to do the above, couldn't hurt because one thing that is conclusive is that Cold Temperature causes your body to kick start itself to try and bring it back to normal body temperature |

I take cold showers, and in addition to shivering under that great cascade of semi-ice, I find that my skin is itchy for a few minutes after drying. Has anyone else experienced this? I don't get itchy after warm showers, only cold. |

can't say for sure, but it's possible the cold water isn't rinsing off the soap properly leaving residue behind that could get itchy... |

There are two kinds of fat tissue on humans. Brown and yellow. Yellow fat is the one most people are concerned about...those unsightly bulges around the midsection and so on.
Brown fat on the other hand is actually good for you not bad. |

That brown fat is not as much as a problem as yellow fat when it comes to losing weight and stimulating the brown fat deposits may not be a good idea in any case.
Quote: |
"In a third study in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers found that leaner people tended to have more brown-fat deposits than overweight or obese individuals. Interestingly, women were twice as likely as men to have active brown fat, according to the study, conducted by Dr. Ronald Kahn and his colleagues at the Joslin Diabetes Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Still, the findings don't necessarily mean that activating brown fat leads to a trimmer waist. For one thing, the body is especially good at maintaining equilibrium, which is why a boost in calorie-burning can often trigger a hunger signal and prompt people to eat more to make up for the loss. And even if drug companies could find a way to activate brown fat safely, that excess activity could throw off other metabolic systems and damage your health. After all, the people who have the most active brown fat so far are those with cancer and hyperthyroidism." |

the original article i posted never said that brown fat is a problem. it just said that you can burn more calories by activating the brown fat with cold showers and that by activating brown fat, you burn off white fat. |

I love hot showers, but I do that same thing that the OP described in the winter. I get really bad itchy, dry skin, and the hot water just dries it out even more in colder temperatures. I also read somewhere that this method can assist in strengthening the immune system. |

When popular diet plans failed, Ray Cronise, former NASA scientist and founder of Zero G Corp., says he found an extraordinary way to lose weight by tapping into the laws of thermodynamics: he was going to literally freeze his butt off.
"The current paradigm of losing weight is diet versus exercise, calories in, calories out. I was able to do was figure out that another big part is the environment we're in. Our body temperature remains constant and it takes a lot of energy to keep it that way, no different than heating your house," Cronise says.
By exposing his body to cold in the right ways, he theorized, he could boost his weight loss. In fact, he doubled how fast he lost weight using these techniques, losing 30 pounds in six weeks.
"I treated my body like a thermostatto see if I could run up the utility bill and get the furnace, [my metabolism,] running at full blast," he explained in a presentation on his weight loss given at Wednesday's TEDMED conference.
Cronise's inspiration came when, desperate to find a more efficient way to lose weight, he heard that Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps ate 12,000 calories worth of food a day. Even with all the athlete's physical activity, it didn't make sense to Cronise why he would need that much.
"Then I found out it was the water," he says, because the cool water forced Phelp's body to constantly fight to maintain its temperature.
It turns out, this phenomenon was well-studied by the military and the space program in the 1950s and 1960s, only in the context of keeping weight on soldiers in cold, harsh environments, not on weight loss. |
http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Wellness/nasa-scientist-chills-body-shed-pounds/story?id=12000983
According to Timothy Ferriss' book, The Four Hour Body, Cronise drank a gallon of ice water every morning, slept without any covers, and took 20-30 minute "shiver walks" in the middle of winter (with only a t-shirt on his upper body). |

how about ....
don't eat sh7+ food and exercise. Take a cold shower if you want, but don't scarf down that full meal deal if you want to keep the weight off.
People will do anything to avoid being sensible sometimes. |

what is the point of your post?
there is an alternative way to burn fat possibly more effectively than diet and exercise and you crap all over it. for people who are interested in health and fitness, this is very interesting.
is this how you are in real life? someone tells you something new and you make a condescending comment? |
