Something really interesting just happened in Romania: Klaus Iohannis won the presidency in a surprise result as polls showed him about eight points behind in the runoff.

He was born and raised in Romania but is also part of a Transylvanian ethnic German minority, numbering about 36,000.

The post of president was created in 1974 under the late communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.
The president is in charge of foreign policy and defense, and names key public prosecutors and the chiefs of intelligence.
Iohannis has promised an independent justice system and to turn Romania into a "normal" country. |

His political career began in 2000, when he became the city's mayor with his candidacy raised by the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania. He has often been described as the official who has helped Sibiu to rank among the country's most beloved tourist destinations, putting forth huge effort to renew the city's historic center, improve infrastructure and administrative efficiency. In 2007 Sibiu was European Capital of Culture alongside Luxembourg. |

In Germany, the President is the head of state and has to give approval to Chancellor candidates and appoints Federal judges. A little bit similar. |
