People from really shitty countries, like Indonesia or something, would give their right nut to live in a country like Canada, the UK or even the USA. But here we are, leaving these countries to live in Korea. They must think we're nuts. I mean Korea is a step up from filth, poverty and violence, but it is definitely a step down from fresh air, lax drug laws, sailboats etc.

Anyway, they must think we have a screw loose.

Obviously KR is a huge step up from the US/CN/AU in many ways. Koreans who have never lived in these places might not understand this yet...

I've encounter it; "why the hell would you want to move from the US to KR?". When I ask "have you ever BEEN to the US?", they answer no. So it is more about their knowledge of KR vs their imagined knowledge of the US.

I prefer Korea to the UK. England is a rotting piece of cabbage in all respects...

British people are often bossy, sarcastic, hostile, cynical know-it-alls. Maybe Koreans have a lot of irritating habits but they still have a refreshing sense of innocence and energy. The UK is at the end of their era. Korea is still at the beginning of hers.

I have been away from the UK for almost 9 years, and I am yet to experience a sense of homesickness or a longing to return.
My missus spent a year there as a language student when she was in her early 20s, so she has a romanticized view of the UK. She simply has no idea what it means to actually have to live and survive there.

Well, the West in general is in a state of decline. US/UK/AU/CN all hit their peak decades ago, they are now in the decline phase where they are starting to rot. There were things that were great about those societies, but those greatnesses, while not totally gone, are now withering.

Anyhow, when Westerners toss out the phrase "those crappy countries" I always think of these maps floating around the internet...

Then you came to Korea and were treated like a king. Smile

'wow, these people really like me/respect me, I can carve out a nice little existence here' almost parasitically.

Use Korea to save some $, study and give yourself more options. Your view of Korea may well change as you live here longer (or not)...

I've never been under any illusions as to the nature of many Koreans. But I've always been a free spirit, and I like the anonymity, independence and convenience that Korea/ esl gives.

I always thought of UK -particularly the north- as a quite depressing place.

I've been to parts of Merseyside that make manila seem safe. It really is grim up north.

Im from the North, and while id say theres a certain 'hardness' to the people, I still find them generally quite freindly. There are also a lot of very beautiful places.
This topic (for the third time in as many years...) reminds me of a conversation that I had with a freind back home. We were quite pleased that Southerners thought of the North as grim as it kept away the tourists and the beaches etc (in Northumberland for example) were still pristine. It also keeps the errosion down in most of the National parks.
Incidentally, the North has always since time immomorial been thought of as grim - by most cultures - ever.

Have you seen game of thrones?

'Up North' would also include the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, Chester, York, Harrogate, Whitby, Chatsworth, Castle Howard etc.. etc..Just that one area of the UK has got a lot more going for it than most countries, inc Korea
