Many people are afraid of someone infected with Ebola entering Korea's very densely populated cities. Do you think they should ban travelers from countries that have outbreaks of the disease? |

It's not as bad as what conspiracy theorists are saying. I'm not worried about it. However, doctors should be asking questions like, "Have you been to a country that has an Ebola outbreak?" When diagnosing a patient for a cold and flu like symptoms. |

Of course not. Now if you want to talk a 21 day quarantine for soldiers and aid workers, maybe. |

Sure. Ban everyone from any country that has a confirmed case of Ebola (that would eliminate all the US applicants for the next little while).
It would certainly make it easier to find jobs if 30% of the E2 applicants were removed from the pool.

No, because then South Korea will be accused as racists.
Canada and Australia have put a ban and the next day
every headline read, "Is Canada racist?", "Is there a racism problem
in Australia?"
These are ridiculous claims. |

No, they are not ridiculous claims. An outright ban on people from countries where there is an outbreak of that particular disease is not supported by good science and good medical practices. Such a ban is merely pandering to fear and a lot of that fear is based on prejudice. Otherwise there would be a call for an outright ban on travelers from the US also. |

But it is supported by FOX news.

Well, that doctor had no symptoms and had 10 days free travel. Now he was good enough to self-report, and he was lucky enough to not have infected anyone else.
Those aren't guarantees, those are probabilities. The problem is, with a disease as deadly as ebola, the 10% chance that someone in a similar situation would infect someone and the 30% chance that they'd die is still too high. That whole death thing is kinda hard to undo.
I find myself skeptical of a policy that relies on "voluntary self-reporting". That policy is a naive and unscientific one based on the ideology that human beings are inherently good, honest, and rational.
Now, I don't think they need to be put in some sort of draconian isolation facility. Just stay at home for 21 days on paid sick leave and get delivery pizza paid by credit card and have someone drop off groceries at the door. That sort of thing. Spend the time on the treadmill, skyping, and cleaning up the old house.
I was quarantined at home for 14 days in Korea. It's not paradise, but its not like jail or anything. |
