Hi guys, need some help.
(1) Standing pushups helps muscles to become stronger.
(2) Standing pushups help muscles to become stronger.
Is (1) incorrect? If so, why?
Thanks! |

Is it the name of a recognised sport/discipline or just a collection of things? If it's the former you can use a singular verb
e.g. 'Aerobics is fun'
if it's the latter a plural verb is preferred
e.g. 'Aerobic exercises are fun.'
I'm not a gym enthusiast but I'd suggest standing push ups would merit a plural verb |

I agree with Ed.
I can do a push up.
I can do push ups.
Push ups are countable.
The 'standing' part is what has me scratching my head.
Are you standing when you are doing these push ups?
Or doing handstand push ups?
A google search brings up both.
Either way...Ed has grammarcised wisely. |

When I read his question I assumed he was asking about the use of the word "help" .
I'm curious now too. |

Then again, if it's the standing that helps, as in 'standing formation helps you get counted', then, of course, you need to use singular: gerund form, singular verb. In this case, I'm 99.99% sure it's the countable pushups we want, so I would always use the auxiliary verb 'are'. |
