The Hagwon owners will be pleased.
I foresee, next year being the final year for EPIK across the country. |

Because this was the year that 'ring fenced' EPIK money ran out.
Some areas have found money from other pots to keep parts of the program running, albeit at a reduced number.
I've said this for a while now, but others have said no no no, they'll just reduce it to pre-2008 level ect.
Now that Chungcheongbuk-do has cut EPIK entirely (or so it seems) there is the precedent for others to follow...
It'll be interesting to see what other education offices do in the coming weeks.... |

I believe this, pre-2008 it was like 100 NET's for the whole country. Not 100 in one city. |

This could turn out to be one huge blood bath - they should audition each of us, to see which of us should keep our job.
Think 'EPIK got talent'
If you've been asked to volunteer for anything in the last few weeks, see this as a pre-cursor. They're already starting to form lists!

But, then again, you might be right. They are not renewing most of those Korean English Conversation teachers. And they are Korean. If they chop them, we are certainly expendable.
I think they have multiple-year contracts though. |

I see a glut of sham marriages - guy, a 28 Californian, marrying ms Yoo, a widowed 68 year old who needs her drafty back passage blocking before the cold winter snap starts.
The law of unintended consequences - I bet immi makes F-6 VISAS harder to get. |

There is a bit of truth to this speculation. However it is a bit more complex. From what my wife has been watching on TV there is a funding shortage in general for the MOEs across the country. The individual MOEs are now under the pressure to meet all the government's promises even though they lack the funds. The speculation isn't on EPIK right now though though it has been mentioned. The 2 that are being heavily been talked about is the free school lunches or the 90% subsidized Daycare for 1.5 yr to 5 year olds. (The program is run by the MOE and is under their budget) The reason EPIK is not on the chopping block in discussion is because it costs only 5% or less of the School Lunch or Daycare programs and the money shortage is much larger than EPIK but not quite as large as either of those two programs. |

Ah, so that's why it's different places cutting, in different years. Not every provinces' MOE covers the exact same programs, like lunches. Lunches in my province aren't free, it's paid for by the students. |

This year they implemented a language requirement for the foreign spouse and an income requirement for the Korean.
In addition, they often ask for wedding photos, bank statements, housing contracts, etc....its not easy to get in most cases. |

That is only for those spouses coming from less developed countries.
From Developed countries the requirement is just to share a language. Money is not required beyond having an address which implies you have key money somewhere and an income to pay rent. |

With the exception of the language requirement it seems to mirror the U.S.'s policies when it comes to the immigration of spouses. |
