So, I've got two weeks off at Christmas, and am going to Myanmar. I've booked all of the first week, and am now torn between staying in Myanmar for the second, or heading over to Koh Lanta for a few days on the beach on my way back. Would I regret not spending all of my time exploring a new country, which I've heard nothing but good things about?

I have thought about going there for a while. All I know is make sure you take crisp new US Dollars.

That goes for Indonesia too, when arriving and getting a visa.

Myanmar is fantastic. I spent 17 days and never ran out of things to see. I'd do the full 2 weeks there. A week can be rough because bus rides can be really long, like 8-12 hours. I spent a day and a half in Yangon, took the bus to Kalaw, did a two day trek to Inle Lake, hung out there a couple days, bused to Bagan, stayed 3 nights, bused to Mandalay and stayed 5 nights to check out the surrounding villages, then went back to Yangon for another day. Good times, good times.

I opted to spend 4 days on the beach in Koh Lanta. I hope I don't live to regret that.....

I'm living like a boss and flying within the country, other than the boat from Mandalay to Bagan, so hopefully I make the most of it.

you will regret it, Myanmar was one of the most fascinating places I got to see in all my years there, went 4 times and each time something grabbed me, its changed so much between my first trip in 07 right before the uprising and my last trip last summer.

Just look at all the ATMs and all the cars now, those are the biggest changes I saw

Goddamn my louche beach tendencies. I swear before I came here the idea of a beach holiday was appalling to me....

I certainly didn't regret a few days on the beach in Koh Lanta, but damn Myanmar is fantastic. I can only imagine what it was like a few years back. Still top notch, and anyone should go as soon as they can, as it's catching up with the rest of the stupid world really fast....
