READ THE CONTRACT!!!!!

You will work 20-21 classes of 80 minutes with a 10 minute mid break making it 20 classes of 90 minutes (1800 contact minutes per week) for the SAME MONEY as the next hakwon monkey working 1500 contact minutes. That means you work an extra 6 hours in the classroom every week for the same money and double the classroom time of a PS teacher with the same money and 4 weeks less holiday then he gets.

Then there are the other typical hakwon issues that you will have to deal with.

No pension, no medical (in spite of it being in the contract), 10 days annual holidays when they say you can take them (not usually blocked so it is difficult or impossible to actually do anything on them).

All due respect ttompatz, I worked at an SLP for three years and never had any issues with pension or medical, being paid late or anything else financial. They even gave us tax-returns each February (most hagwons pocket the cash).

The vacation was 5 days in the summer and 5 days in the winter, the schedule is made by the Sogang Foreign Language Department.

Each SLP is individually owned and operated. Sogang University has say so over the curicullum. That said, you may run into the usual hagwon problems at an SLP; but that does not mean all of them are like that.

OP, do your research and talk to teachers that are there now and former teachers. The workload at SLP is a bit higher, but you will learn how to teach there, not just be deskwarmer or English-monkey (if you get the right school).

SLP is by it's very nature, an evil beast.
Much like the Gremlins of old, it slowly tears away
at your sanity.
Until at contracts end, you have no sanity.
This is a bit of a joke of course.
But, AVOID SLP, they have you teach a heck of a lot more
than most other hagwons, for the same or less money.
Not a good deal, any viewpoint will tell you this.

I currently work at this branch of SLP. I actually like my job. I work hard, but I was a teacher in the states and I can honestly say I worked harder back home. If you weren't a teacher before, it can seem like a lot of work but the lesson plans are basically prepared for you and you follow the curriculum of the level of your students. It really isn't that hard and you get results from your students as you can watch their English grow. This is my second year at this branch and aside from normal work place issues (people not getting along occasionally) it has been a very good experience for me. I work with some people who really care about the children growing and learning. It is a business like all hagwons so occasionally there is pressure about not losing your students, but if you are doing a good job, you won't lose many students anyway. I have not had any issues with pay, medical, or anything regarding money with this branch as they are very careful to make sure we are not cheated of our money. The apartments they put is up in are nice and located on Incheon line one and Seoul line 7 which is super convenient for whatever adventure I decide to get into whether in Seoul or the islands west of Incheon. I have had a good experience and would highly recommend this branch to anyone coming to Korea for their first experience into the country and culture. They even provided us with a Korean class if we were interested in learning, which they didn't have to do but we asked about it and they were happy to provide this service for us. If you have specific questions about this particular SLP please PM me. Since it is my second year here, would I come back to this SLP if I came back to Korea? I wouldn't hesitate to come back again, I feel very welcome here and enjoy my work environment. This is all my personal experience, and I have had some small issues here of course but nothing that I couldn't have potentially encountered at another school, and the way things are handled here has been smooth in my opinion.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Always get the opinion of a FORMER teacher. Current teachers have 101 reasons to throw a stranger (you!) under the bus.

Surely the opinion of a current teacher, who has re-signed for a second or third year, is better than a former teacher whose information may not be up to date, and may have left on bad terms? I understand that a teacher who is on their way out may have good reason to lie, but that doesn't mean all current teachers are going to throw someone under the bus.

I know one of the former teachers at my school who was fired has nothing good to say about the place, despite being given proper notice, a LOR and having no issues with final pay being withheld etc. Yet all of the current foreign teachers are happy there, and are in at least their second year there. Also, since that teacher left, there has been a complete change in management, a lot about how the place is run has improved and facilities have been updated, but none of this would be known to any former teachers.

Unless that one single guy is the only teacher to have ever left this school, then the employers could easily find another former teacher to vouch for the place if a prospective teacher wants to talk with someone.

If someone really had been working at the place for 3 years then I'd give it the benefit of the doubt and consider working there. In that case, I'd need to know for sure that it was true. I know that some hogwon owners aren't above paying someone to write a nice letter about the school. The fact that SLP has a lot more people saying bad stuff about it than good would be enough to keep me away.

I have talked to at least 12 people who have worked at SLP and non of them ever gave me a good report. It's pulling in close behind WONDERLAND, and that's almost impossible to do.
