This came to me when reading cracked.com earlier today. The joke was that a white guy gets the cab while the dark guy is waiting. I first went to Korea in 1997. Many times a cab driver did the wave thing and sometimes you saw the car stop a bit up the road to pick up locals.
This didn't happen much in China, where I also spent enough time to know. I'm wondering if there in S. Korea it's still a thing like it used to be. |

Yes, it still happens occasionally.
Once in a while you get the slow-down, they see the foreigner, and they speed up again and pass you by. That's pretty blatant.
Other times they pass customers for other unknown reasons. |

And you know this because...
Anyway, if I drove a cab, I'd probably skip certain people at times too. Clean attractive people would always get a stop, regardless of ethnicity. No smelly scumbags on hot summer days though. |

Anyway, if I drove a cab, I'd probably skip certain people at times too. Clean attractive people would always get a stop, regardless of ethnicity. No smelly scumbags on hot summer days though. |
Because as a little guy who dresses reasonably well it almost never happened to me while I lived in Korea, but it happened to some of my bigger, sloppier looking friends on the regular. I'm not saying I know it, but it was definitely my impression. I also know a lot of foreigners try to hail a cab with NYC style arm waving then wonder why they don't get picked up. Anyway, maybe I'm wrong, but this was my impression living in Korea from '09-'12. |

But I avoid cabs now unless its absolutely necessary.
Price has gone up and the forced small talk is exhausting.
Half the time they have no idea what theyre doing or just drive around aimlessly running up the meter.
Subway or bus is way better |

It almost never happens in general, but it does happen, and it probably doesn't have much to do with how well you tied your tie that day.

Taxi drivers are aware that they can be reported & fined for selective pickups. New regulation since maybe a couple years ago. Most likely if you get waved off the driver is responding to a call taxi dispatch.

But yeh I'm sure it still happens. Its human nature to avoid customer "types" that have been a pain to deal with in the past. Never a problem I've heard of in Sokcho though & I take a lot of cabs.
Re: price. Still relatively cheap & convenient.
Re: small talk. I dont mind that at all. Most of the guys I ride with are pleasant & taxi-korean is easy conversation practice. I always sit in the front seat. |

Driver refused to take to me Edae station last Saturday night. Opened the door, told him I wanted to go to Edae (from HBC) and he said 'No. I'm so hungry. Very hungry'.
Fucker drove off with my head in the door after I tried to take down his number. Should've just jumped in and refused to get out. |

It almost never happens in general, but it does happen, and it probably doesn't have much to do with how well you tied your tie that day.

They might be racist. Im sure some are. They might also have 20 other reasons.
And I'm sure if all of us were cab drivers we'd NEVER skip certain customers.
The second you have to hose and scrub puke out of your cab or put up with someone getting disruptive and you can't even communicate with them because of a language barrier, you'll understand. |

Right. In a country with a nonsensical address system, "Where you are you going?" becomes a tricky question. |
