How are we supposed to separate our trash? I think I'm doing it right, but my &&*(^*&^ building manager still seems to have a problem.

What I do:

Paper grocery bag with paper trash.

Plastic grocery bag containing bottles and other plastic wrappings.

Plastic grocery bag for food.

That's it right? That's certainly what everyone else in the building does, waygook or Korean. They don't use special trash bags to my knowledge.

I know there is also a special bag for clothing, I assume I can pick it up at a GS, anyone know what it is called in Hangeul so I can show a clerk what I want to buy?

This is why I liked the Japanese way better. It was just PET bottles, not burnable trash, burnable trash, and cardboard.

Anyways, there should be a separate place to put plastic bags, bottles, cans, paper and cardboard. Also food trash should have a garbage bin that you can place the food directly in(not in a bag). The rest of your garbage should be placed in your city's specifically colored garbage bag that you can buy at any convenience store or local mart. I even had a security guard bring my trash bag back to my apartment with a note saying it was the wrong bag...

The whole time I was in Korea I never saw any system other than you put the trash in these red bags that you buy at the stores. Maybe I missed something or it depends on the city or district.

My first year here I lived out in the countryside and my boss put me up in an actual apartment. The apartment complex had a designated place for putting your garbage and different sections for putting bottles, cans, and what not. Even one-room and villa type buildings have some sort of way to organize the trash outside.

It depends where you live.

The last apartment I lived in let us just put everything in separate bags,

but all piled in the same area. (next to a power pole)

The apartment before, was a bit of a pain; the only way I could

get things straight was to get the security guard to tell me which bin or pile

each item should go into. I had to dump trash while he was out there separating stuff. (usually on Saturdays)

Best of luck to ya.

Ok as far as the food, that should go in a bin called food trash in Korean. It's called eum sheek mul serregi. I butchered that romanization but there it is.

He might get mad at you for putting plastic wrappings in the plastic bin--wrappings like the plastic that goes over meat packages etc.. That shouldn't go in the plastic bin--only soda bottles/shampoo stuff like that should go there. The film wrapping should go in the trash bag--it's not recycled.

This is how it is by my house.

Hope this helps.

It's a bit different everywhere you go. My current place does have a place for those film wrappings, as well as separate places for styrofoam, cans, glass, clothing, food waste, cardboard, paper, and general trash, which must be in a special local bag that you buy from the market.

In Tokyo it was a nightmare. They had all the same categories and more. But pickup for each was on a different day and time and you could not leave the stuff out there more than a couple hours early. They gave everyone a calendar. Things like, "rubber bands, batteries, and metal hangers Thursdays at 10am".

When I moved here being able to take trash down anytime I like was a godsend.

Most places I've lived there are 3 bags you usually had to buy. One for garbage, recyclables, and food. I never buy the food one because I just don't have enough food to through away quick enough before it starts stinking the whole place up.

I just love it that generally you place your garbage in front of the building against some pole. However, maybe they should provide boxes or something to prevent those pesky cats ripping them open for food or something.

How often is trash collected here? I sometimes hear a van come and pick it up real early on Tuesday mornings but on other days of the week my trash is sometimes taken within ten/twenty minutes of me putting it out.

Do people take/steal trash here?

Every morning on business days. But I do suspect some places do a second run, because often I'll leave garbage before I go to school, and it's gone when I come back.

Also, there are people, usually old ladies, that look for cardboard and bottles to take to some depot to make money.

It depends on your city & neighborhood. I live on the main street of my town now & anything is picked up every day of the year at about 6am. In previous residential areas I lived there was a definite schedule for various types of trash. I sometimes got a city-issued fridge magnet in my mailbox with the weekly schedule or I figured it out from my neighbors' routines. Apartment complexes have their own sorting methods.

Yeh, scavengers pounce on bottles, newspaper, & cardboard (is that you, Lucas?)

I thought this was a post about this site. Steelrails and his ilk (3DR, optic, along, wishful, etc... free pass ethnicity guys) started taking over a few years ago. The place has been in constant decline since. I hope the admin and mods are happy with their decision to turn it into what it has become.

This site has always been in freefall. Nevertheless, years later, it still goes on.

Can anyone point out, or connect the dots leading up to the downfall of this site?

Is/was it moderators, posters (those who left/joined), topics?

Just curious.

I used to follow this site some years ago...posters come and go.

I remember spliff, as an example. He was cool.
