2.9, 15 hours a week, 20 weeks holiday, a good hour outside Seoul, in the countryside,
or 3.1, 20 hours a week, 6 weeks holiday, in 4th/5th largest city?
Any thoughts? |

20 weeks holiday, hands down, even if the 15 contact hours entailed a bit more work (e.g. grading).
You can always come up to Seoul for long weekends and holidays, and you'd be less prone to systematically piss away your coin out in the countryside. 'A good hour' is a normal commute IN Seoul for a lot of people, anyway! |

Cheers for the thoughts. Yes, with the full holidays, I guess I could always find time to travel about. I guess it comes down to whether I can handle living in the 'country'. It doesn't look too bad with accommodation on campus, and plenty of other teachers to hang out with. Might even make for some interesting weekend adventures. |

Longer holidays is always the deciding factor. This is especially true if you want to visit family for a few months at a time. |

Well, I can tell you that when we lived in HongDae (the HongIk University area), the neighborhood was packed with foreign teachers on weekends, especially long weekends, as there are a lot of nice hostel type places around there (exits 1 and 2 across the main street from the HongDae campus zoo area). |

Yes, I'm leaning that way at the moment. Also could do a winter or summer camp, which would then pay for a few weeks of loitering in the city. Of course, would have to get written permission first. lol
It' interesting that fellow teachers are going with the 20 week holiday, yet the Koreans I know think the obvious choice is Daejeon. Anywhere but the smelly countryside! From what I remember, Seoul never smelt that great. ha ha

Might be a nice contrast that, country life and city living. |

1 hour outside Seoul? No big deal.

Yes, I was thinking the same. Now I'm thinking:
With the country job having lots of holiday time, I will most probably be spending money on accommodation and travel to escape the tedium.
In the second-tier city, though with lesser holidays, I should find the place tolerable enough and hence spend less on travel. Plus, there's the potential to teach the odd private lesson.
Not as young as I used to be, my priority will be to save money. |

I guess I'll be the devil's advocate on this one (only, in this case, I actually agree with the devil).
I'd take the city job. Everyday convenience is a lot nicer than waiting for those occasional chances to travel to the city. You'd blow a lot of your already lower salary just to get to the city on top of the money you'd be spending in the city. Plus, likely have to catch an early bus back to the country. Missed the bus? Hotel expenses (well...or crash with friends..perhaps a non-issue).
But still, what good is saving a little more money if you have no life? Or always thinking, "God, it would be nice if I lived in the city." Six weeks is plenty of time off.
Just my thoughts. |

No peaches in the country, dude. They're in the city.
...and yes, I get the reference. |

Thanks for the thoughts. It's pretty much what I've decided also. It's only for a year, and I hear Daejeon isn't too bad a place. There's also another 17 universities there, so, even with the little down-time, it should be easy enough to find a better gig for the following year. |

Hi
From what you have said it sounds like the city job might be at Woosong.
I worked there a couple of years ago. We had 20hour contracts then too, but most people averaged around 15. I realize things may have changed, just thought I'd pass on the information.
FWIW I enjoyed working there. |
