Exciting topic, right?
But I'm curious, which do you prefer?
Please vote only if you have spent time teaching with both.
Thanks! |

I've used both and I actually prefer chalk. Chalk requires you to do a little bit more work like washing the eraser and buying a chalk holder, but I like it. In my case it helps me write neater because I'm forced to move the chalk a certain way. |

Big fan of plain old white chalk. I use the board boldly: writing big, illustrating, emphasizing. By the end of class I've usually left an artistic tableau of the lesson essentials. The kids (PS) get to clean up after me haha. Oh & chalkholders are for sissies.
Whiteboards suck. Markers are quick to fade (chalk holds its integral quality down to the nub) & the whiteboard itself soon becomes permanently grubby (chalkboards always come pristine again).
No contest. |

What places still use chalk boards? You know, a good chalk board has a glass core and would be considerably more expensive than a white board. I use the word would because there may be a handful of those that still exist. |

White Boards are faster and allow for much clearer diagrams with multi coloured ink. Though once I got used to a blackboard I was fine. However some schools use the oil based chalk and that is easy to write with but hard to erase and write quickly again. White > Chalk > Oil Chalk IMO. But this is all personal preference. |

I find white boards are often more difficult to clean especially if the ink has been left on the board for some time. The erasers are impossible to reuse and need frequent replacing which makes them environmentally unfriendly and more expensive over the long term. |

I like the water chalk here (need water to erase it) because the students can't erase it with their fingers while walking into/out of class.
Also, the chalk stays on for hammer/fly swatter games. Anything on a whiteboard gets smudged on the first strike.
And a stick of chalk lasts a lot longer than these markers.
If the markers lasted longer and they were being compared with chalk that doesn't need water to erase, I might go with whiteboards. But things being what they are....chalk. |

True...I miss my previous hagwon because they had all smart boards. The only thing that sucked about them was that teachers didn't know how to treat the pen. So the touch point would always end up getting broken or someone would drop it right on the point... |

The teachers at my school could never handle a smart board. Someone has twice written on the whiteboard with a name pen. |

I hate smart boards. They get in the way of my pictures or ppt's. So, I always present the material in class and then write on a white board beside it any points i want to illistrate. Easier to erase then having to resent everything via computer on the smart board. I absolutely hate chalk boards but some of my classrooms do still have them instead of the white boards. Not many, though. |
