The next time I buy salt, I'm going to check where it came from very carefully.
Quote:
Slavery thrives on this chain of rural islands off South Korea's rugged southwest coast, nurtured by a long history of exploitation and the demands of trying to squeeze a living from the sea.

Five times during the last decade, revelations of slavery involving the disabled have emerged, each time generating national shame and outrage. Kim's case prompted a nationwide government probe over the course of several months last year. Officials searched more than 38,000 salt, fish and agricultural farms and disabled facilities and found more than 100 workers who had received no — or only scant — pay, and more than 100 who had been reported missing by their families.

Yet little has changed on the islands, according to a months-long investigation by the AP based on court and police documents and dozens of interviews with freed slaves, salt farmers, villagers and officials.

Nearly all Korean salt comes from the same place. It comes from that island area. It is loaded onto ferries that bring it to Mokpo. I used to live in the apartment next to the port in Mokpo where it is transferred onto trucks.
I have visited some of the islands in that area.

I guess I'll have to stick to Morton's--when it rains, it pours.

A faint singing was heard from the jukebox:

"Steel rails, chasing sunshine round the bend
Winding through the trees, like a ribbon in the wind
I don't mind not knowing what lies down the track
Cause I'm Looking out ahead, to keep my mind from turning back"

What strikes me is the whole creepy lack of empathy.

...although slavery exists in the west too, of course.

So the Koreans government was embarrassed internationally by the "nutrageous" behavior on Korean Air? What about this. Anything short of Korean authorities showing up on those islands and freeing those wretched souls is unacceptable.

I doubt anything will happen unfortunately. Korea is hardly famed for its enlightened attitudes to the disabled.

Looks like some are having a rougher time in homeless shelters and want to go back to their slave masters.

http://tech.firstpost.com/news-analysis/on-the-backburner-heres-why-india-doesnt-have-netflix-or-spotify-yet-243344.html

Amid short-lived public anger last year, regional government officials vowed to open an exclusive facility for the freed slaves and connect them with new jobs. The promises haven't been kept, and activists believe there's little chance they will be.

Kim Jong-seok, the former slave languishing in the homeless shelter near Mokpo, said that his ex-owner, who is being investigated for abuse but hasn't been arrested, recently visited and asked if he'd work for him again for about $90 a month.

90 dollars? They will get too unruly mowing down on ramen and chips and acting like kings. Do they even have heat or warm water in the winter.
