Hi
I want to go teach in Korea for a bit before I head off to graduate school for 4 years. Problem is, graduate school interviews are held sometime between October and December. My current plan is to try finding a 6 month contract in between April and October, interview in November, then come back to fulfill another contract. My less savory plan is to take on a year contract around April and ask for a 3 week break(at the expense of some penalty) in November or break contract 6 months in.
Any suggestions for revisions to my plan or another plan entirely would be much appreciated.
Thanks! |

Stay home.
Your plans are unworkable in Korea.
6 month contracts for newbies flying in just don't exist. It's not worth their time to get the visa paperwork done for a short timer.
Planning on leaving for 6 months in November (middle of the school term) is equally as unlikely to happen. Teachers need to be in school when school is in.
IF you want short term work then try Thailand or Taiwan. Buy a ticket, fly in and get work. Nobody is going to buy you a plane ticket fora 6 month booking.

There is an eco-focused English village in Incheon that recruits for 6 month contracts. Worth Googling around for more info. There are also soe jobs in China for 6 months, full benefits, but they may want a TEFL cert, |

Well the 6 month contract route is not my favorite choice. I would prefer a year contract but I need to do the interviews in fall/winter. The school interview scheduling is somewhat negotiable. Would it be outrageous to negotiate with the school for two weeks off in October and two weeks off in January. I wouldn't mind working in Japan or Taiwan but my dad lives in Korea which might make things more convenient.
Also, I just checked out ICEV. Didn't read anything about a 6 months contract but I'll take your word for it and I sent them an e-mail. |

Yeah, it would probably be pretty outrageous, in most schools' eyes. Sorry. |

The place I was thinking of is UNESCO Global Peace Village. They definitely used to offer short term contracts. No idea if that's still the case but they seem like a decent place t work if so. |

If you don't need a flight over and you're willing to take housing allowance instead of an apartment, you will probably find someone willing to negotiate with. |

Or just sign a year long contract and quit at the 6 month mark. |
