Singer Joe Cocker, best known for his cover of the Beatles' With A Little Help From My Friends, has died aged 70.

The singer song-writer from Sheffield had a career lasting more than 40 years with hits including You Are So Beautiful and Up Where We Belong.

Can't say I followed his career too closely. I knew his cover of A Little Help From My Friends mostly via the show Wonder Years.

I always thought Love Lifts Us Up Where We Belong was kinda cheezy, in that big-hair 80s kinda way.

This seemed pretty sexy when I saw it on TV back in the day...

He certainly had a unique style and strong stage presence - I was so close to the stage during his frenetic performance at Woodstock that I was a little worried he might fall off the stage and land on top of me ...

Here's my (pretty lame) karaoke tribute ...

Sad. I caught him at the Tower in Upper Darby in 1976. I seem to recall it was a great show.

Wasn't a big fan, but had seen him a few times over the years - his blue eyed soul was sweet in the early years, but his voice had worn down to a gravely shout since the early 90s. However, he always had outstanding bands and he knew how to showcase them. I saw him in Bethel, NY a few years back. He left the stage for a good twenty minutes and let the band cook....he only really sang for an hour but the show went on for two.

Check out the Stingray album....a bit past his prime but his backup band was basically the Stuff (Richard Tee, Eric Gale, Cornell Dupree)....session men of the highest order.
