In the West you usually only see them at posh restaurants or clubs. I never understood the need for them as they did nothing that you couldn't do yourself. I would still always tip out of guilt or pity.
Now check out the service you can get in Thailand. You can actually get a massage while you are relieving yourself.

By the way, are the even attendants in women's bathrooms or is just a men's thing? |

Bathroom attendants are a nuisance. "Will you please wipe my butt for me? It's hard to reach."
In Thailand they could go a thousand miles by getting rid of all the hoses and squat toilets in the Kingdom. Those are the most disgusting things on the face of the earth period. Why don't Asians understand that? Do Thai hotels use squat toilets? No, I wonder why. |

this isn't new actually. i've found myself getting a back massage quite a few times when using a urinal throughout se asia. it really startled me the first time and even though i'll never get used to it, it's not quite as strange anymore. |

...As are excess supermarket attendants, parking attendants, department store salespeople, etc etc.
Which is why shopping here is an irritating ordeal. Too many people pretending to "help", nobody actually skilled enough to do so when called upon.
How many Koreans does it take to change a light-bulb? This country has a penchant for overstaffing.
If you cut the number of employed people in half this country would run more smoothly. |

I agree. My friend told me before i came to Korea that Asia is full of men whose job it is is to do nothing. I didn't understand. Now i do. You can add women in shops to that list too. They are annoying and get in the way. |

Especially salespeople. The ones that follow you around like a chihuahua if you so much as look in their direction are the worst. Most will back off when asked but some will keep following you all the way to your apartment if they can sell you something useless and overpriced.
I've had a clerk run up to me to ask me if I needed something as I opened the door. I told them no thanks and walked right back out. |
