hi
I'm going to be a newly-minted state of Texas certified teacher this May. I'm getting a science grade 7-12 (12 to 18 years old) certification, then adding on ESL, English and History. I'm also probably going to do a cheap online tefl.
Not really much teaching or life experience. Long story.
Also male and will be 29 years old.
What are my options besides Hagwon drudgery? |

Not much if you want to work in Korea.
You lack the home country experience for a decent international school. That issue will be the same everywhere.
Look at Taiwan (public schools), HongKong (NET) or China.

Hmmm,
So if for some reason I want to go to Korea (China too gross and dirty), will the certified teacher status plus online TEFL at least raise the salary/help me be more selective with jobs? |

Probably not without some home country classroom experience to go with it. Almost certainly not in the world of EFL.
Your on-line TEFL cert is essentially worthless.
A TEFL/TESL endorsement on your teaching license on the other hand might get you an extra $100/month.
LA is gross and dirty as is the industrial belt around the great lakes.
I guess the USA must be "gross and dirty" with no clean places to live and work? China is bigger than the USA. China, gross and dirty depends on the where.
Entry level EFL in Korea = 2.1 million krw. ($1900)
Better schools in China = 10k RMB ($1600 but lower costs of living)
2nd tier international schools in Thailand = $1800 (lower cost of living and better weather).
Time to start looking at the actual job postings (location, requirements adn remuneration packages) to see where you fit (and without that 2 years of home country experience to go with your "license" it is pretty low on the totem pole).

| Let's be real, the pollution and dirt in the anywhere with Western amenities in China does not come close to comparing to the worst parts of the USA. |

So is that two years of home country experience the golden ticket to good international schools then? I'm possibly going back to Canada this fall for my after-degree in Ed and was hoping to work in an international school in China upon completion. Is this unrealistic? The wages look quite good from what I've seen. Subbing for years is not an option. I need money!! Perhaps the territories are a possible destination for two years?
Couldn't one work their way up the totem pole in China or elsewhere without doing the two years in their home country? |

I wonder if two years at a 2nd tier international school would work as well.
My ultimate goal is Russia, though. |

If you think China is 'too gross and dirty' then Russia going to make your head spin, ever thought about staying right where you are?
Some people are just not suited to this, no matter what their qualifications, have a good think about it.  |

You have never been to China.
Chicago and Shanghai are both megatropolises. Both are polluted and are filthy.
You are wrong what you state, if you want to state crap, people will call you out on it. That might not be the way in Texas but that is how it works in the rest of the world.

Anyway, does anyone have useful advice on the job market for the two of us in this thread that are interested?
How much would experience at a 2nd tier international school abroad count for the better international schools?
What about positions in-country--for example, at a Taiwan public school, then transferring to an American international school in Taiwan? |

Not sure about American international schools there, but you would be able to teach at a public school in Taiwan, which is considered a pretty decent job there, well, better than a buxiban for sure. Taiwan, Korea and China all have issues with pollution, sure you can work in a part of China where pollution isn't an issue but who really wants to? The cities (preferably 2nd-tier cities) are where you would want to live in China, same as Taiwan actually.
As a certified teacher you would most likely make the most in China at one of the big schools there that prep students for living in the West, usually low hours, high pay and free accommodation. I am not sure about pay in Taiwan these days, but as far as I know it is similar to Korea in that the average pay there is the same as it was in 2003. |
