This sounds like a really bad idea. Korean weddings aren't even that pricey, unless we're talking apartment and car. |

Drop the ridiculous "wedding hall" stunts and the price is completely reasonable. All that's required is to pay the registration fee at the city hall/gu office. And if a foreigner is involved, of course there will be some minimal fees for the paperwork required from the embassy/consulate.
I wonder if the wedding loan from the pension office applies to a Korean getting married to a foreigner? |

The above poster seems to be confused as to why Korean men are so stressed about "wedding" costs.
"Getting married" and having a wedding mean very different things for Westerners and Koreans.
To a Korean, getting married means several things that are separate in the minds of Westerners, only one of those being the wedding ceremony. The main cost to them is the cost of buying a house or plopping down Jeonse. The second biggest cost is furnishing the entire house. The wedding is only the third largest cost. So this is why young Korean men of my age complain about the cost of getting married--because houses are not bought as an investment decision, they are bought irrespective of the current market prices or any financial considerations. Wedding? Have to get jeonse.
Also, it is completely intertwined into the minds of most Koreans that a baby will arrive 9 months after the wedding, so there are those costs as well. |

I laugh at the cheapo westerners on this site. Getting married? Yea just a piece of paper. No big deal. Why waste so much money? LOL
These attitudes really show why they are single, divorced or soon to be divorced. |

Plenty of well-off, happy, successful people blow off the big wedding because it's a sound financial decision to do so. Moreover, weddings do not exist for the bride and groom, they exist for everyone else. Screw the wedding and save your money for the honeymoon (which is actually a shared experience). Or do you hold women in such low regard that you can't imagine one who wouldn't want to engage in the frivolous expense of the stereotypical white wedding? |

On one hand I would agree, but on the other hand a lot of the costs associated with these 'wedding hall' weddings are frivolous and arbitrarily expensive.
My wife and myself have numerous friends here in Korea that have spent upwards of 100,000$ on a wedding here in Korea which is completely outrageous if you ask me.
For ours, we flew her immediate family to USA, had a beautiful wedding with around 75 people, flew back here, had a reception with her family with another 75 people all for under 17,000$. |

My Korean friends who blew off the big wedding hall stuff will be quite amused to have been called "cheapo westerners". |

Cheapo Westerners you say? A Korean wedding hall wedding costs a whole lot less than a decent wedding in the west. A western bride would be embarrassed to serve the slop they have at wedding hall buffets. Korean weddings don't have bands or Djs, rehearsal dinners or open bars. |

Just for the wedding day? We shopped around and I was surprised how affordable Korean weddings were. You could have a decent ceremony with 50 guests, all the usuals, dress, flowers, food and grog, maybe knock a few of the stupid extras off (I.E the guard of honor of wedding hall employees flanking the aisle, holding sticks up as the the bride walks down). $5000.
For $100,000......I shudder to think of the tacky, gaudy tat that must have been added on to make up that price. I guess another 100-200 guests would push the price up too.
But $100,000?
I know friends and family who have spent that much back home. Prices pile up pretty quickly. But the factory system here, coupled with the piles of cash you get as wedding gifts, make it a pretty economical undertaking.
But like someone said above, for a lot of men there is also the prospect of apartment, car, baby, furnishings etc. to contend with. |

Nice little slice of homophobia there. Stick gay in with other insults and hope no-one calls you on it. |
