|
|
Hello!
I'm in the process of choosing a certification course in order to get my TEFL/TESL/TESOL certificate and apply to teach in Korea. The program I am looking at currently has 100+ hours of classwork but no required live practicum involved. I know some areas are picky about practicum hours. Do Korean schools demand that the certification course involve those live practice hours, or is it the certificate itself only that matters?
Thank you. |

If you want to work in a public school (EPIK) then your TEFL must have 20 hours of actual face-to-face classroom time (not necessarily a practicum). That is raised to 60 hours in the case of the Busan MOE.
That said, should you ever choose to go beyond South Korea then the gold standard in TEFL certs are the likes of CELTA, Trinity cert TESOL or SIT cert TESOL. In those cases the course is 120 hours and includes 6-20 hours of observed practicum with real students.
IF you are only going to spend a year or two working in a Korean hagwon then a TEFL cert is not needed and most employers don't care.
