Quote:
A North Korean prison camp escapee, who is now a high-profile human rights campaigner, has apologised for inaccuracies in his story.

Shin Dong-hyuk, 32, was the subject of a best-selling book after he fled North Korea in 2005.

The book described how Mr Shin was tortured, and his relatives killed.

On Saturday, the author said that although the key elements of Mr Shin's accounts were correct, the time and date of some events were wrong.

Disappointed. Not sure if I'll bother reading autobiographies any more.

The young man at the center of The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven, Alex Malarkey, said this week that the story was all made up.

Malarkey, ha ha

I'm friends with him on Facebook; he just posted this:

What im about to say is concerning the great sin i committed against my mother and brother and one of things i had initially wanted to conceal forever.
A frw months ago The North Korean government and their propaganda team released a video with my father featured in it saying many false things including the following: my brother and our mother murdered someone and as a result were executed for that crime.
Watching that video i felt so helpless and overwhelmed with guilt..
Rewinding to that One night when i saw my mom prepare some food for my brother i assumed it was for an escape and out of jealousy i snitched on them to a guard.
The next morning i was called on by that guard and he had me sign a document (by stamping my finger on it) confirming the content in it was true. He said if i did so hed give me what i want.
(For example food...)
What i read on that document was that i witnessed and reported the plot planned by my mother and brother of a murder.
-- i read it and signed it with no feeling.
Little did i know what would unravel after having done so. I never could have imagined the horrible things that would take place after putting my thumbprint on that piece of paper.
A few days later i found out that the guard had hit somebody and they ended up dying.-It was he himself who had committed the murder and framed my mom and brother.
It was then when i realized how severe the situation was and by the time i tried to go back and clear their names and correct what had been done , (iwas only just a 14yr old prisoner afterall) it was too late.
Within a few months the execution was set and my father and i were dragged out to watch it.
My mother was all tied up, and as she passed me by , i felt her looking at me. I also glanced her way and noticed that she was swollen all over. I could not look or make eye contact with the two of them. I knew very well what was about to happen and it was a shame.
Mother was hung.
brother was shot.
I didnt know till later but apparently while imprisoned leading up to the day of the execution my mother had been giving her food portion to my brother.
she was no murderer. She was willing to sacrifice and give her food for my brother. She would rather starve for her child like any other mother might.
Im sorry i left out so much from 'eacape camp 14' but im trying my best to clarify what i can from this point forward.
