U.S. envoy to Seoul Mark Lippert was seriously injured Thursday morning after being attacked by an armed assailant, official sources said.

The envoy was on his way to attend a morning lecture in central Seoul when the attack took place.

Lippert, bleeding heavily, was rushed to a nearby hospital, the sources said, adding that the suspect was immediately arrested although his or her identity is still not known.

Hope he's alright. Seemed like he and his wife were really active locally and trying to learn about and experience Korea as much as possible. They even gave their new baby a Korean middle name. Confused

No wonder so many people in the world don't like Korea. When was the last time any good news came out of here?

Wow, so you'd prefer the Mideast, where the security level for Americans can be always high? Rolling Eyes

It could have something to do with the recent protest outside the US Embassy in Seoul. Protesters demanded an apology after someone in the US State Department said that Korean politicians vilify Japan in order to increase their popularity among Korea's nationalistic citizenry.

Apparently the man cited the KR/FE drills and had Nork sympathies.

Some on S. Korean TV also said the guy had a history of this and might be something of a publicity hound.

Well I for one am shocked, surprised and horrified! Korea is such a nice, warm, welcoming and friendly country! And it's safe too, so I am not even sure this incident really happened. Korean people are far too kind friendly and diligent for such atrocities to occur in the best country on the planet.

Korean parents love their children.

So many people in the world don't care about Korea any more than we care about Latvia or Honduras. They only know Clown Kim and eating dog.

Stop confusing your view with the rest of the world's.

I am not fan of US foreign policy but there are two nations that still exist today because of it, one is Israel and the other is South Korea. I know nobody likes foreign troops in their land swaggering around the place but they are actually stopping people of the same blood and race as the South from wiping them out. Rolling Eyes

My money's on World Traveler finally cracking regarding weed legalization and the US job market. Or maybe Dodge7's ultimate troll attempt.

Psy must be proud. Isn't this part of what he advocated in his "Dear Americans" song? Attacks on Americans. Hopefully someone will stick a microphone in his face and ask him if he approves of this attack on a prominent "kojangi" and representative of American occupation forces.

Hopefully people won't be rushing to conclusions about safety in South Korea because of this incident. Unfortunately a couple of posters here already have.

Garbage. People from our countries cared so much that they fought a war and died for South Koreans to be able to live the way they do today.
You would do well to remember that fact.

What are you talking about, man? Yes, marijuana is superior to alcohol, and yes, the U.S. job market is not as bad as some people claim it is (rationalizing their situation I guess), but that has nothing to do with this thread.

Quote:
"the suspect is a 55-year-old man with the last name Kim"
Quote:
"Lippert was slashed on his right cheek and hand with a knife measuring about 10 inches long"
Quote:
"the suspect came up from behind, pushed Lippert down on a table and started attacking him.

In July 2010, Kim received a suspended two-year prison sentence for throwing a piece of concrete at a Japanese Ambassador to South Korea"

So suspended sentence means no penalty? No fine or anything like that? (Maybe because it was against Japan?)
