Quote:
One-person households make up a quarter of South Korea’s population, and that figure is expected to rise to a third of the population in less than 20 years.

South Korea is the world’s fastest aging country, and more young people are choosing to stay single and live alone.

In a country where getting married and raising a family is seen as a priority, people like Kang Hee-Young are bucking the historical trend.

“Married people around me have to worry about things like raising children and spending time with family. But I get to spend that money solely on myself, and I can enjoy different hobbies,” Kang said.

Kang said the single lifestyle is a rational choice, because she can invest all of her time and money on herself. The 35-year-old makeup artist lavishes most of her $2,700 monthly income on clothes, golf, and raising her cat, Shasha.

Hardly surprising that the younger generation is increasingly averse to marriage when you see the utter misery of the older generation.

Well, that and the fact that women are worse off than the men when they get married. If I had to deal with the in-laws and basically become a slave to them traditionally, I wouldn't want to get married either.

I walk a lonely road
The only one that I have ever known
Don't know where it goes
But it's home to me and I walk alone

I walk this empty street
On the Boulevard of broken dreams
Where the city sleeps
And I'm the only one and I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk a-lone

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow hearts the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Til then I walk alone

Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ahhh-Ah
Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ah-Ah

I'm walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line of the edge
And where I walk alone

Read between the lines of what's
Fucked up and everything's all right
Check my vital signs to know I'm still alive
And I walk alone

Just putting off the inevitable as long as she can, she says so herself. She should cash her chips in while she's still got her looks as she's already missed the boat on having a healthy pregnancy. 35's too young to be a cat lady but give it another 5 years. When she gets to forty she'll be going around complaining about why there aren't any 40 year old handsome rich guys interested in her Rolling Eyes

Is she also currently spending all her money on clothes and golf games etc.. while no doubt banking on a future husband to pick up the tab for things like apartments, pension plans and the like?

The thing is that the 40 year old man will still be able to get married to a woman in her early 30s. Whereas a woman in her 40s is going to have a far more difficult time finding a spouse.

Maybe she doesn't want to get married or have children. It feels like everyone thinks that the end game is to get married and have a kid. I can understand her way of thinking and more power to her. She is able to do whatever she wants without the shackles of having to change her way of life just because she's in a relationship with someone.

I don't know what she spends it on to be honest, but I do know that she does have her own money. I'm not sure what she does (something fashion or make-up or something like that) but my wife tells me she pulls in around 6 mill a month.

Kang doesn’t plan to live alone forever. But for now, she said she wanted to enjoy the freedom to spend as she pleases.

She'll be lucky to find a Korean guy who doesn't expect her to churn out at least one and I'm fairly sure not living alone won't involve just shacking up with someone.

Maybe so. But it's a hell of a risk if you might change your mind as you get older.

Why is it that the "don't want kids" type always end up with cats?
