I was just wondering what the norm is here.

I've searched around a lot and I see that a lot of people do the 9-6 or 2-10 (or similar) so they're at work 40-45 hours a week, but they actually teach 30 hours per week.

What do you work? And what's your pay?

30 teaching contact hours per week is so exhausting. Your throat could get sore and start hurting by the time you hit 25 (or less). Harder than in sounds.

Drink a lot of water, coffee, etc. Go to the bathroom each break.

I'm 40 hours at work and 22 to 26 hours (depending on overtime or extra teaching).

I use to be at work closer to 28 and teach for 18 to 20 hours a week. That was rural pre recession Korea. Those were the days. I'm sure some secret places still have that a bit. Well, there's always China.

Eight hours teaching time. 2.9 including housing allowance. No office hours.

Privates nine hours, 3.0 (these are several groups of students) half of this in my home school.

So about 17 hours a week. Cool

This topic always seems to devolve into a bragging contest among those with the fewest contact hours. Maybe I'm a weirdo but I derive considerable satisfaction from teaching lots.

I learned (taught myself) to teach in an all-ages hagwon (1999-2001) doing six straight 50-minute classes every day. You catch a rhythm. Fifteen subsequent years in Korean public middle schools (22 class hours a week) was a nice plateful.

Now I'm in a position where I could have geared down to a handful of hours a week or even retired outright. But I've signed up instead to teach 30 classes a week in a public high school in an exotic little country & working for relative peanuts.

Suits me.

My first hagwon gig in 04 was nuts: 2-10 Mon-Fri and 7 of those hours were spent in the classroom for starting salary 1.9. It went up to 2.2 my second year there. Luckily it was a really good hagwon. Always paid on time. Great boss. I don't really miss it though now that I'm making about 1.0 more and working significantly less, though sometimes I miss having the smaller classes and having to deal with less office politic bullcrap.
