More than half of my coin jar has become those tiny 10 won coins.
I am pretty good at carrying a few coins with me whenever I go out so I can make exact change. But no store actually uses prices that go to 10 won, so there is never a chance to use them. Then I finally realized where they are coming from.... Costco. Strange that a big bulk store is the only place in Seoul actually using 10 won coins. So I try to remember to take a few 10 won coins to costco whenever I go, but usually forget...
Are there any other stores that use 10 won coins in their pricing or checkout? If you pull out , say 100 won worth of 10 won coins at a convenience store, do they take them or say "sorry"?
It's not really enough for me to go to the bank about, my local banks typically have terrible lines anyway. It's more about being a bit compulsive about this and wanting to actually use them.
Thanks! |

Before I left Korea I gave a big pile of 10 won coins to a derelict who always used to sit around Tapgol park. He shouted a tirade of abuse at me for my efforts. Got rid of them though. |

What is so difficult about taking them to the bank?
Use the coin sorting machine. I've never seen a lineup for it at my bank. |

I hear ya. I found it oddly satisfying to maintain a minimal number of coins in my pocket without any excess of them by the end of the day.
Emart & buses were the only places I got Korean "pennies" in change, plus the odd one I'd pick up off the sidewalk for luck. I'd always have my coins in hand at the checkout to round off my bill & use up my coins. That seemed to confound some clerks but they were always obliging.
By the way, some banks have do-it-yourself change-counter machines you dont need to line up to use. You just dump in your mixed coins & presto, paper money. All banks of course will accept any amount of coins without any need to sort them if you want to empty your piggybank & start clean. |

What about using vending machines?
With train fare I think 50 won coins are the smallest one used. |

Set the jar in the street, someone will pick them up. |
