Hello everyone,
This is a general call-out to all foreigners teaching in South Korea! I am currently working on my Master's Degree project and need some help! Part of my research requires passport-style photos of teachers currently teaching in South Korea. I need pictures from all areas of English education, including Hogwons, Elementary School, Middle School, High School, and University. If you can help me, please e-mail your photo's to: [email protected]. Please be advised that your photos will be shown to survey respondents and your participation is completely voluntary. Your identity will be kept completely confidential and your pictures randomly selected.
In your e-mail, please include your picture, age, years of teaching experience and area of study (i.e, hogwon, elementary school, middle school, high school & university).
Thank you in advance for your help. Your participation is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Stephen Poirier |

What questions are you going to ask when showing the pictures? |

A damn good question!
I would send on my pic which will end up over the caption 'does he look like a child murderer/rapist/fetishist?'
You need to furnish the great and the good with a bit more detail, OP. |

Well, I am relieved to discover that my participation is completely voluntary. I feel as if I've had a close call. |

OP, here's what you should do: Provide the name of your institution, the approved institutional review board forms justifying the need for photos, a breakdown of what you'll be doing with the photos both during and after the research including steps that you'll take to preserve the confidentiality of the participants' identities, a full breakdown of the methods used in the study, and your theoretical framework for the study's design.
Also, you should use an official email from your institution instead of a generic gmail address. |

This is one reason why institutions have IRB. It not only assures the protection of human subjects, but also helps the researcher avoid looking completely clueless.
There are certain procedures you must following in giving your subjects information regarding how their information and pictures (or whatever) are going to be used. (Pretty much all mentioned by the poster above...with the exception that the IRB is usually where you do everything *before* approval...not as an aside to approval. From what I know you do not have to give the overall frame--theoretical nor methodological--for your research, but you must say how you plan to specifically use the pictures. The details of your research is what IRB will use to figure out if you actually need these pictures; you don't need to confuse your subjects with all that mess, but they are entitled to know how you plan to use their specific pictures and for what specific reason, i.e. I will use your picture over a choice of "does he look like a criminal to study racial profiling in elementary school students in South Korea" or the like as mentioned above).
By Korean law (yes, it's a law), you also need to get these subjects' written consent and a contact number (typically the Institutional Review Board at your institute) where they voice objections and clarification. Lack of IRB approval can also get you immediately kicked out of school for attempting such research, so be careful. Follow the proper route or stick to the gmail account and hope you manage with your current "method."
This is all work that your advisor SHOULD be doing with you or at least advising you on how to do it without breaking human rights laws and institutional regulations. |

The request makes zero academic sense, but economic sense...possibly.
These pictures seem far more likely to end up sold to some Korean Cupid like website than to appear in any legitimate academic endeavor.
Or not.
Stephen is this you?

Oh, that's really gracious of you - telling us our participation is "completely voluntary". I have a suggestion. If you're for real, then post now on this thread your current photograph and cv so we know who exactly is asking for such private information and why.
I also suggest that you offer some money. After all, we're not a charity. If this MA thesis actually exists then it will be benefiting you financially in some way or another in terms of higher earnings etc.
And it's clear from your constant posting on the buy and sell forums that money is uppermost in your mind.
And let me guess - you're doing this MA in the School of Internet Harassment at Korean Sentry Online University. Like your little friends from Korean Sentry you really are too stupid and twisted to understand how transparent you are. We saw this post coming 10 years ago.
Now go back to your one room and listen to your neighbour's snores. |

Right--I was just requesting it in my post because I was curious, not because it's an IRB requirement. |
