I am in EPIK's application process and even though I took a tefl course I feel unsure about my lesson plan, I would love it if anyone who has gone through EPIK could take a minute to look at my lesson plan and give me some feedback!
I hear everything has to be perfect so I am a little freaked out.
I want to make sure my lesson is age appropriate and not little or too much for one lesson. Also it seems the official EPIK lesson plan template leaves out a few things that I learned to put in with my tefl course...Is it okay/good to add more boxes to your lessonplan or would that be against their format/bad to do?
Here is a link to my lesson plan: http://givemelust-for-life.tumblr.com/post/117130695120/i-am-applying-to-epik-and-this-is-what-i-have-for |

You might want to split up those big boxes for Introduction and Development a little into smaller units of time for each thing that you do during them. I know it makes a mess and isn't really necessary for teaching the class, but EPIK likes their demonstration class lesson plans cluttered and minutely detailed.
A co-teacher of mine sometimes gets me to edit the English versions of ten page lesson plans he'll make for a single 45 minute demonstration class. |

Longtime epik teacher here & I've observed many classes. Your content level is pitched about right but a couple problems with the activities jump out at me.
Activity 2: The kids will quite naturally just look at others' cards & not really bother with the speaking part. Even if told to keep them secret, theres no pay-off for succeeding. A little weak as activities go, I'd suggest a re-think.
Activity 3: Too difficult. You're overestimating the writing & reading capabilities of typical 4th-graders. Maybe just have them draw pictures instead (within a short time limit), with labeling as an option for more advanced students. As above, theres no real conclusion to the activity. Kids at this age like to perform, so after practicing maybe invite some volunteer pairs to act in front of the class.
Also, giving too much pairwork time risks students losing interest & going off-task.
I dont know what the application reviewers are looking for exactly but this lesson plan strikes me as generic & lacking something. |
