Overall I'm pretty happy living in Korea. My little bubble limits my interactions with Korean strangers, and my Korean friends give me enjoyable exposure to native cognition.

However, there are a couple of things about Korea that upset me. One of which is the appearance, and then swift disappearance, of food I enjoy. My local Costco started stocking fish sticks. I enjoy fish sticks. They can be cooked from frozen and taste pretty good. Served with chips and tartar sauce, they provide a cheap fish and chips to the easily pleased.

My local Emart also started stocking meat pies. I could choose from minced beef, steak, or spicy minced beef (for when I was feeling particularly adventurous). I used to take them into work and have them for lunch. Boring or difficult classes were made bearable by the thought of having a pie for lunch. Sometimes, on my day off, I would have a pie with a beer for my lunch. That simple combination of pastry and meat was a ray of sunshine on an otherwise cloudy day.

So imagine my dismay when I went to my local Costco and couldn't find any fish sticks. Nary a single fish stick to be found. However, there is no point crying over spilt milk or absent fish. Unfortunately there was more disappointment coming my way.

I then went to Emart to stock up on pies, only to find the cuisine equivalent of excrement where the pies should be. I searched high and low to find the pies, but deep down I knew they were gone.

The dream is indeed over. I'm sure I will summon the strength to carry on, but the scars of no longer eating the food that brought me such joy are fresh and deep.
Therefore I am asking for your help. If you live in Seoul and frequent either Emart or Costco, please look for the fish sticks or pies I have mentioned. If they are in stock please let me know so I may go to that particular store and purchase said items.

E mart stopped carrying so mant items I like over the years. First it was Dr Pepper, then Chunky Soup. Campbells soup. Cranberry juice. A different kind of soup. Lays chips. Cranberry juice. Hard cheese. Sour cream.

Most of those products have since returned at nearly double the prife. I can live without them except for the Dr Pepper.

Definitely noticeable with foreign products at Emart, my town's only big store. Here for a while, get nicely accustomed, then suddenly gone for good. I've gotten philosophical about it & figure it was time for a change anyway.

Just last week I saw meat pies in the emart in my neighborhood. Go to Eungam Station (응암역), line 6, exit 3.

Also, I could have sworn I saw fish sticks at the Ilsan Costco 2 weeks ago - Baekseok Station (백석역), line 3, exit 1 (there's signs directing you there inside the station), not exactly sure on that one though.

Yeah, I'd say check back. The pies disappeared at my local e-mart for a week and were suddenly back the next week. Don't know what the heck they think. I buy them and moosehead beer like they're going out of style, but they never seem to have either when I want them. Regarding the pies, in my opinion, the chilli ones are the only good ones, and I've had 'em all at least twice. Chilli ones be GOOD!

Costco? Chunky soup, frozen OJ, and normal sun-kist or aussie(my favourite, so far here) oranges seem to always be absent lately. Nearly makes me wanna cancel my long-term memberships. Nearly. Would be nice if they could FINALLY stock some nice jalapeno chips or maybe even salt & vinegar ones...please.

Joy of joy! It seems all may not be lost. If the last two posters are correct perhaps my days of enjoying fish sticks and meat pies are not numbered.

This thread has been particularly supportive and empathetic. Where I expected ridicule and mockery I was greeted with kindness and understanding. Well done everyone who posted.

When Tesco leaves Korea the food situation will really take a major hit.

The disappearing food is probably in response to the disappearing foreigners.

I agree. Every time I find a food I like, they take it away. That's why I'm stocking up on Reese's Minis.
