Howdy folks,
I have an interview with this school and was wondering if anyone has heard much about this particular branch. I had already interviewed with, and turned down, a position with Chungdahm in Busan, but the recruiter I'm working with claims that the branch in Bupyeong works on a very different policy. I have been trying to find information about them online and in contrast to the branch in Busan, I seem to be finding very little about them. Of course I plan to ask to speak for the contact info of any current or previous teachers before I sign a contract, but as someone who is trying to enter the ESL field, I was wondering I am trying to do as much homework as possible before jumping into an unfavorable position.
Thanks much! |

"I worked for CDI for 6 months before doing a runner, they are shady as *beep*. They count on people not knowing the law, not being prepared for a court battle, and not being able to get another job if they get fired because they have no documents, so they pull all sorts of bullshit.
Teachers at my old school are all "independent contractors", but are don't get paid pension or medical, and the contract has ridiculous penalty clauses like giving 3 months notice, and paying back recruiting and training fees, which the school claims to be in the millions of won, without evidence to prove it, they just deduct it, which is illegal.
They basically want to lock you into your contract and prevent you leaving before your year is up, and will threaten legal action if you break contract.
It's a shitty job too, the curriculum is bullshit, the training is a joke, it's just a massive money-making scheme and you a white or gyopo monkey holding a tablet, that's it.
tl;dr: DON'T WORK FOR CDI" |

I do recall reading about that lawsuit, but I was under the impression that involved their "freelance" hourly-wage employees, which it what the hiring director in Busan was pushing for. But I could certainly be wrong.
According to the recruiter I am working with the director in Bupyeong is looking for a for a full-time, monthly-wage employee. According to him this position does come with pension, severance, and insurance. Of course I won't just take his word on it.
I guess all I can do is take the interview and at the end ask for the contact info of a current or previous teacher. |

If you take a job with CDI then don't come back 6 months later and wonder how to escape without losing your shirt in the process.
You have been warned

You're completely wrong. The lawsuit is about illegally listing employees as independent contractors. What do you expect the recruiter to say? The recruiter does not work for you; he works for the school.

If it's CDI, you had better read that contract with a fine-tooth comb handy.

Or you can take the advice from the poster above. CDI has built up its bad reputation over more than a decade. If you take the job, you deserve whatever happens to you, without any sympathy. |

Wow, I feel like that was slightly uncalled for. First, the recruiter wasn't the one that told me that, that was my understanding from the article I read and I even admitted to being open that I might be wrong. Second, forgive me for being glass half full and questioning if there might be a chance that there is one halfway decent director in the franchise. |

I'm wondering if anyone's had any experience with the big crocodile down the stream? The one with the scar on his face?
Crocodiles are dangerous. Don't go near them.
Yes, I read that after googling crocodiles. But I'm wondering about this particular crocodile.
Who cares about this particular crocodile? They're dangerous. Keep your distance.
I don't really think that's fair. I think all crocodiles are different, and I just want any information on this particular crocodile. I really want a pet, and he's the closest animal to my house. So I would really like for this to work out. I read about the small crocodile, the fat crocodile and the purple crocodile. I know they're no good. But the one with the scar? He might be different!
I know that guy! I was walking by the stream about a year ago and he jumped out and bit a chunk out of my leg! Ate my poor little doggie, too! I had to stab him with my keys to get away, that's where the scar came from. Stay away from him!
Ok, thank you. But that was a year ago....maybe he's changed? I'd like a more recent review, thanks!
I am literally getting eaten by this crocodile right now. He is up to my waist, and I was able to get my phone to call for help, but saw this topic so decided to post here instead. He is a maniac. He ate my entire family along with a litter of cute baby otters right before he got a hold of me! And he's actually smiling and laughing while he's slaughtering us.
Hmmmmm...I always believe there's two sides to the story. Maybe you feel like you don't deserve to have your family eaten before your eyes before being devoured yourself, but I'm sure the crocodile has his reasons. Maybe your family was being loud? Maybe the baby otters asked to get eaten? I'm just saying you don't know yourself. And the fact that you're on the internet already means you're a negative person. I mean, think of all the people who walked past this crocodile and DIDN'T get eaten. They didn't run to the internet to tell their positive story!
Clearly your mind was made up before you ever asked your first question. Just do what you're going to do and keep this account for later when you need help with your new rampaging crocodile pet.
*Sorry, I've seen threads like this all too often about this company. If you've googled them and still need to ask, just take the job. I doubt anything else can stop you if that didn't.* |

I'll give you the answer you are looking for. CDI as a whole has a bad reputation, however there are good branches out there. I've known people that have really liked working for CDI and have stayed at the same location for mulitple years and I have also known people that pulled a runner. If you can't find anything online about that particular branch, then you should at least get an email from a current teacher and ask many questions.
I would not take the full time gig at CDI. You get no red days off and only 1 week of vacation. You get no pension or medical. It doesn't seem worth it to me.
You also have to do their week long intense training, which is unpaid. |

there are three (maybe 4) chains that have shafted so many people out of so much money over the years it is now recommended that people avoid ALL branches of these schools nationwide
1) Chungdam
2) Wonderland
3) SLP
Whats amazing to me is I was recently rereading "Prisoner of Wonderland" and even almost 14 years later they are still pulling this stuff on people. HTF do they still manage to hire people, same with CDI. |

I don't care what your recruiter says. You will be overworked. You will be working on weekends. And you will be working on holidays. |

Not only do they still manage to hire people but CDI still has a reputation for being the best/most prestigious hagwan around for kids. Not by me I hasten to add but a bunch of Korean teachers I was training once came out with it as a 'fact.' I don't know how they manage to keep that going if they're as bad to their teachers as you all seem to be making out. |
