http://www.cnn.com/2015/05/20/politics/south-china-sea-navy-flight/

America is positioning its warships around the South Chinese Sea. We've been pouring our military in The Philippines. We are in position to strike at the heart of China if this thing gets hot. And it might get hot. Thinking about moving to China to teach? Stay away unless you want to get caught in the middle of the possible Chinese/American war.

Thoughts?

I think your post is an overanxious and poor rendering of the link you provided.

LOL, you do realize that this stuff happens all the time, right?

And even if a naval skirmish broke out, there's no way that the US would start bombing or invading the Chinese mainland. The only worry you'd have is some sort of Chinese civilian anti-American riot.

Anyways, the Chinese are more likely to target the Japanese. And if they did so, it would probably be something like shooting down a helicopter or ramming one of their ships.

All kinds of things could happen ... All kind of things do happen ... but a land war involving expeditionary forces fielded by either side for the purposes of an invasion would be a logistical nightmare of epic proportions all the way around. I'd go with a lottery ticket before betting on a payoff on that.

China state paper warns of war over South China Sea unless U.S. backs down

BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese state-owned newspaper said on Monday that "war is inevitable" between China and the United States over the South China Sea unless Washington stops demanding Beijing halt the building of artificial islands in the disputed waterway.

The Global Times, an influential nationalist tabloid owned by the ruling Communist Party's official newspaper the People's Daily, said in an editorial that China was determined to finish its construction work, calling it the country's "most important bottom line".

The editorial comes amid rising tensions over China's land reclamation in the Spratly archipelago of the South China Sea. China last week said it was "strongly dissatisfied" after a U.S. spy plane flew over areas near the reefs, with both sides accusing each other of stoking instability.

China should "carefully prepare" for the possibility of a conflict with the United States, the newspaper said.

"If the United States' bottomline is that China has to halt its activities, then a U.S.-China war is inevitable in the South China Sea," the newspaper said. "The intensity of the conflict will be higher than what people usually think of as 'friction'."

Such commentaries are not official policy statements, but are sometimes read as a reflection of government thinking. The Global Times is among China's most nationalist newspapers.

China claims most of the South China Sea, through which $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei also have overlapping claims.

The United States has routinely called on all claimants to halt reclamation in the Spratlys, but accuses China of carrying out work on a scale that far outstrips any other country.

Washington has also vowed to keep up air and sea patrols in the South China Sea amid concerns among security experts that China might impose air and sea restrictions in the Spratlys once it completes work on its seven artificial islands.

China has said it had every right to set up an Air Defence Identification Zone in the South China Sea but that current conditions did not warrant one.

The Global Times said "risks are still under control" if Washington takes into account China's peaceful rise.

"We do not want a military conflict with the United States, but if it were to come, we have to accept it," the newspaper said.

The odds of a war between China and the United States is about the same as the odds of English teaching wages here going up to keep pace with the increased cost of living. In other words- ain't gonna happen.

For once, I agree wholeheartedly with World Traveler.

Neither the Chinese nor the Americans want to kill each other. The Americans have a special place in their heart for Chinese, and Chinese have strong connections to America. Any politician or military official who attempts to start a war between these two countries will be impeached/sacked/dismissed.

I just saw an interview with a retired general from the US Army. He made quite a few good points. One was as long America has a presence in The China Sea the possibility that war will happen is going to increase. What happens if a Chinese aircraft hits an American aircraft by accident? He also brought up an interesting fact. When an emerging superpower challanges a more dominant superpower like America, the chance of war is at 70%. As long as China decides to build these fake islands, they are putting themselves at risk for war.

I'd hate to be in Korea if war breaks out. Why? Because you'll see the true colors of most Koreans. I guarantee you that if war happens, the Koreans will want all foreigners out of their country. They will look at America as bullies. They may say that they hate the Chinese, but deep down inside they realize that the Chinese are their Asian brothers and sisters.

Clearly, because that happened when the Chinese poured troops into Korea during the Korean War. Rolling Eyes

After all, nothing says Asian Brotherhood like the affinity Koreans have for the Japanese.

There's a difference between war and skirmish. There may be an incident where a couple planes get shot down or a ship gets sunk and some row, but it won't disrupt things, both sides will work to tamp it down.

At worst there'd be a 2 week-1 month sea battle over some islands where a few ships might get sunk, but nothing severe. Certainly nothing that would lead to any serious deployment of ground forces or military action outside of the disputed area. It would probably be the PRC vs. Japan, with Japan getting support from the US.

Korea's role in all of this would be to be the 3rd party that keeps money and goods flowing between Japan and China while all this happens until the politicians sort it out and things go back to normal.

Or you could believe others who say full out war is a distinct possibility, just like Putin storming Poland, Mexican Cartels taking over the SW US, Iran raining nuclear death on everyone in 5 years, and Kim Jong Eun's nukes taking out the West Coast as his robo-legions storm the DMZ and capture the US President.

This situation can and should be dealt with economically. All China does is produce what the west tells it to. The West can say, we need less.

With relation to the South China Sea, China sees it as being in its sphere of influence, even if it is 500-600km from its shores.

Much like the US made known that South America was in their sphere of interest and anyone trying to influence that sphere would be messing with American interests and might be cause to go to war.

I don't see war coming, but I do see some sort of agreement being made in the future between China and the US.

I wonder though what 1-2 good storms will do to these man made islands...

No matter what some folks think...the U.S. can not win a war against China. It's not even a stalemate; China would would put an azz whipping on the U.S.

The U.S.; Active Personnel 1,429,995 approx. China, 2,285,000 approx.
And North Korea would join in and help China...with its military which is larger than both the U.S. and China combined.

China also does not want the U.S. to invade NK as well; they don't want the U.S. to put military bases so close to its borders....

The U.S. would have to bring the war to China and fight on their grounds.
It does not take a military analysis with 10 PhD's or Generals with 30 years experience to know what the outcome would be. Look at it this way...the U.S. could not even take on Hitler alone! Hitler was doing good against the U.S. and would have continued doing so had not the rest of the world joined in and helped the U.S.! So going against China...forget it. No war.
