Interesting read. One thing I see is that the North Koreans and South Koreans share in common belief that losing to Japan or the Japanese is simply unacceptable. Or as the champ said ‘If I lose this match, I will have to retire.’

Below is the result. I seen her fight before and I think she's actually a solid boxer and pretty tough too.

Decided to take a look at one of her fights out of curiosity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wuqwfc9Zeig

I thought she would lose - her opponent was physically by far better built - but when she got her momentum going, she really got into it. That was quite impressive - though I do think the fight was stopped a bit prematurely.

If a fighter takes repeated shots and doesn't throw back the ref will stop the fight.

You are probably thinking of MMA. In this instance, she was knocked down - she was given a countdown and was ready to go, but the referee figured that she was done for and ended the fight.

Anyways, the momentum was certainly on the Korean boxer's side, but her opponent was ready to continue -

Alas, MMA and boxing have similar judging issues - even the worst of referees keep their jobs.

half of them are paid off by the promoters. Tyson refers to this a lot in his biography.
