I've secured a job working at a Hagwon in Meyongi, Busan- 3 weeks in they moved us from our single unit housing to unused classrooms in their sister school. I live with two other foreign teachers who are all leaving. I like Korea and want to keep teaching, I'm looking for advice on what the most plausible legal option is... |

Legal option?
Well, first...do you want to live in one of their sister schools to begin with?\\
C'mon man... |

Is there a (bathroom)toilet/sink and a (kitchen) ricecooker/microwave?
Is it an apartment-style set-up?
If so, carry- on!
The other option is to move in with the owner. I've seen this over and over.
Not sure what the 'legal' option would be...
The man does not have any money or this would not have happened!
Is this your first job in Korea? Please elaborate. If the room is indeed an upstairs apartment/one room, (which is very common in hagwon's) then you might be over reacting. Once my friend told me she was being forced to live in the school/classroom. I rushed to her aid and walked in to a small, one room apartment above the school. This is Korea. Things are a little different here.

You haven't said if you're otherwise happy at the school, or just how bad the accommodation situation is (eg is it set up like a proper apartment, or just a classroom with a bed), so it's hard to know what you mean by 'plausible legal option".
If you can give more details on the new accommodation and your situation, people might be able to give appropriate advice.
I vaguely recall taxes being different for residential and commercial properties, so you could have someone look into whether or not you're legally allowed to live there.
If your contract specifies single housing, then they could well be breaking that aspect if you don't have your own kitchen/bathroom etc.
One thing to consider - if you've got your ARC and the address is your old apartment, you have 14 days to change your address or you'll be fined. |

Leave. Pack your stuff and bail. Of course it's illegal to have you living in the unused so-called sister school.
Either you were put up in an inn for three weeks while the boss was trying to secure a cheap lease on an apartment and that fell through or you were put up in an actual apartment and the lease renewal fell through. Now, why would that be? There is one answer and only one answer: lack of money.
Your boss has no money. Very soon, you will discover that the boss has no money to pay your salary in full.
I repeat: Leave. Pack your stuff and bail. Oh, yes; be sure to do it before the fortnight Aine1979 mentioned expires. And, I sure hope your boss doesn't have a stranglehold on your diplomas and passports. |

WAIT!!! Until you a get a pay check, then go! Act like everything is okay, otherwise you might not get any money!!! (ease your diploma off the wall, if it is there, before you ease out) |

We had apartments here, but they obviously couldn't afford them, so we live in classrooms and use the school kitchen/ bathroom. I don't want to mention the name of the school as I still work here and they may check this site, but I was wondering if anyone else here has bailed on their contract and gotten work elsewhere and how possible it is if they won't release me from my contract. |

Does your contract specify the type of housing they provide? An apartment is a lot different from making you live in a classroom. I say, review your contract and see exactly what it says about housing. They probably aren't honoring their original promise by making you live like that. Then you can call the labor board and see if you can file a claim. |

I'd be rather impressed if the contract said, "The employer shall provide a classroom in an effectively abandoned building in lieu of an actual and legal place to reside."
I notice that my posting above was spot-on. The employer in this case has no money. Waiting until payday is merely increasing the amount of salary that will be unpaid.
Best option: Leave. |

While being moved into an unused classroom (room on school property converted for living) is not a particularly nice thing to do it is also not illegal (read dorms).
The labor board will NOT get involved UNLESS there is a breach of labor law (and this is not a breach of the labor acts).
Fourfeathers26 asked, "I was wondering if anyone else here has bailed on their contract and gotten work elsewhere and how possible it is if they won't release me from my contract?" and the short answers are
"NO", not easily and
"YES", very possible.
IF you plan to do a runner based on your housing then you can expect to be looking for work in China or SE Asia for the duration of your contract period.
The other option that MIGHT work (not 100% guaranteed) is to obtain new documents, do a runner to Japan (to clear your visa), return and find new work. You will then need to do another run to China for a new E2 visa.
Obtaining the new documents is the "cost" of doing the runner. If you are American with a 1-year, multi-entry visa this may not work. Go go China.

O.P., many moons ago, I had a school house me inside the school, next to the kindergarten play room. I did not have a bathroom or kitchen of my own. Everything was located in the play room....
Though it was furnished and looked very nice on the inside, it was a year of hell.
I do not recommend it...get out while you can.
Stand up for yourself. #*^& that dirt bag owner. |

I think it's rather clear that the so-called living quarters which the OP and others at the same outfit have been moved to are certainly not dorms. And a dorm would likely be listed with the appropriate government entity as a type of residence, would it not? |

LOL. We have a winner for the worst advice ever given on Daves.
You know that ajoshie who's kicked you out of your apartment, who probably won't pay you in full, has caveman table manners, snorts, horks, hacks, smokes in every room, and has no consideration for anyone but himself? Move in with that guy (and his ajumma wife).
What could go wrong?

This comment was written to indicate the only thing that could be WORSE than living in a classroom! (Not as an option) Please say it isn't true.
Surely you didn't think I'd ever advise someone to self-inflict punishment upon themselves in this horrific manner? |
