Would I have to undergo a detailed medical check in the U.K. before coming to South Korea? The reason I wonder about this is the following: The last time I went to Korea it was with the Jeollanamdo Language Program (this province does not use EPIK). When I got to the orientation in Gwangju, there was a medical check there. But I was told I should have seen a doctor in the U.K. and had some of the checks done there. So they scrambled to find extra time for me to see the doctor and complete the tests.

Well, I would not want a medical check in the U.K. I had to get one before I went to China, for the first time, and it was not available on the NHS-as the requirement of a foreign employer, it was deemed to be outside their remit. Consequently I paid 400 pounds and the cost has gone up since then.[/b]

No. You do the check in Korea. ...Unless something has changed. But I've only done them here in Korea.

Then probably it was just that someone from Jeollanamdo board of education wanted it or recommended it. In any case, I got to Korea without the medical check.

You def don't need to...but if you have some concerns it might save you from making a long trip to Korea for nothing. I know of two cases where someone was informed they had cancer....one teacher got a routine check before coming over...they caught it and that person remained home to get treatment. The other teacher arrived....went for their medical check....cancer....sent straight home.

Obviously this is a pretty rare circumstance but it doesn't hurt to get checked out before coming over.
