Does anyone know how long it takes for the health care program to kick in after receiving your E2 visa? I've applied for the visa, but they say I can pick up my ARC card in 3 weeks. Unfortunately I'm getting sick and I think it will require medication.

Also, any idea how much a visit to the dr. will cost without insurance?

Medical care is pretty cheap here even without insurance. I don't know how long health insurance takes to kick in (part of it depends on when your employer sends in the paperwork), but you are covered from the first day of your contract. If you go to the dr or pharmacy and pay yourself you can go back and get reimbursed for the insurance portion as long as it is within the same month I believe.

If you are at a hagwon the chances are that your National Health Care will never "kick in". Pay the bill and get your director to pay 1/2.

If you are at a public school you should get your card/booklet shortly (30-60 days) after you get your ARC.

Cheers ttompatz, but my last two academies were legit and everything was taken care of. I do have my suspicions about this one however. I has to do a lot of negotiating to get them to agree to pay their half of the NHIS but have only been on the job a week so it will be awhile before I can confirm whether they are, or not.
But I need a dr now!
