I've never been a huge fan of the slasher genre, and took a complete pass on the Elm Street films. I guess Scream was kind of entertaining, and possibly started the trend of complete self-awareness in horror-films, which is not the standard posture for the genre.
I remember a made-for-TV thing he did in the 70s, starring Linda Blair, about a suburban girl who finds out that her cousin(or friend, can't remember) is really an evil witch.
