In my previous post I gave a detailed description of where my money goes each month. I have approx 750k left over after spending on all necessities, which is usually spent on entertainment.

Entertainment would include:

Eating out at restaurants that cost more than 5k
Booze
Dates
Movies
trips
Sporting events
Coffee shops
etc...

So, how much do you reckon you spend on monthly entertainment?

Thats a tough one because trips can eat more into a yearly budget than a monthly budget IMO.

I try and spend less than 100$ a week on the stuff you listed above, but a yearly or biyearly trip might well cost 5-10k between me and the wife.

My wife and I probably drop maybe about 500 a month on that stuff. Rough estimate; some months more, some less.

The wife and I spend about 100.000 per month. Sometimes it's a little more or a little less. I've probably spent about 40.000 over the month of September.

However, we rarely go to a theater, we don't drink alcohol or smoke, etc., etc.

We take a small day trip within Korea about once a year.

We have taken five trips outside of Korea in the past 12 years.

A single guy should be able to get by on 50.000 per month for entertainment.

Seriously? No, that can't be serious. A decent meal with a couple of drinks sees you drop 50-60K easily. A few hours at a pub with the guys and you'll drop 50K easy.

I must second PRagic. The comment is comic, not serious, so can be dismissed, as inferring that something is true of one or more of the parts from the fact that it is true of the whole is a fallacy of division. Bereft of wife, the singlular "I" in the first sentence is left with half of 100,000 KRW, and thus lacking plurality, asserts that as enough for solitary entertainment. Only moochers can seriously attempt to get by on 50/month.

Serious. Neither my wife nor I drink alcohol. We don't go to pubs. We go out to eat maybe once, sometimes twice, per month. The last time we went out we shared a pasta dish together, had salads and 2 colas. If I remember correctly, it was less than 30.000 won. If I was single, I would probably be spending around 50.000 per month on entertainment.

This is a ridiculous discussion. Someone who spends money on going to movies/restaurants/bars will spend money on this, someone who doeesn't spend money at these places won't. Rolling Eyes If you think he's weird for not spending money on this kind of stuff, that's a different discussion

Okay, I stand corrected. Hookers and blow? No. The word "entertainment" here can be defined by these examples: walking around, watching birds fly, listening to leaves fall, drinking water at the fountain, laughing at jokes, pausing to sit on a bench, and holding hands with your special someone in a park. All of that is free. In that case, the estimate of 50/month may be overly generous.

I dated a lot of women before I met my wife. For the most part, they were all gold diggers or looking for a one night good time. I wasted a lot of money when I was in my early twenties.
Let that be the lesson for all the single guys out there.

Well, last year, when I was in Korea, I spent more than I wanted to on travel. Because the place I lived was boring outside of school, I ended up going to the bus terminal every 2-3 weeks to escape. So the 30,000 won bus ticket to Seoul might have to be included in my fortnightly entertainment budget. Sometimes it was Daegu or Busan, bus the cost and distance were similar.

At times I resented spending money on buses and hostels/motels, but I did try to budget to an extent, so I left Korea with a fair bit of cash.

No way dude, you had birds and leaves and benches and what not, you were doing it wrong. 50.000 a month, simple as.

With such an exciting life, why bother saving money at all? You have so many fun things to look forward to each day, you may as well be dead.

I enjoy my job. It's one of my hobbies. I have other hobbies, too. Listening to music (free). Reading books (online, discounted books). Hiking (free). Bicycling (paid 100.000 for a nice used bike). Writing (cost of pen and paper, computer. Meeting friends for a latte and talking. I have many things I enjoy doing. Just because I don't spend 350.000 won every month on alcohol and cigarettes doesn't mean I don't have a good life.
