Hello everyone! I am new to this forum, so I apologize if I ask any questions that have been answered before.
I am truly curious how likely it would be for me to be hired.
Currently, I am a senior in college, and will graduate in December with a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management. I plan to take an online TEFL class soon after graduation. I have 6 months experience as a teacher's assistant at an elementary school, and prior to that, I worked for a year as a science tutor for elementary aged students.

From what I was reading on some sites, it is preferred to have some practicum hours when taking the TEFL, but I was wondering if my job experience would make up for taking a strictly online course.

I should probably mention that I do not speak Korean, but I do want to learn. I am fluent in Spanish. I am a Hispanic female. I mention this because I don't know if that becomes a factor in the hiring process.

Thank you so much for your time!

If you hold a passport from the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa, hold a degree in any subject and have no criminal background, you'll be eligible to work in Korea. TEFL is a requirement for public schools (unless you have a degree in education), but not for hagwons, although you may find it useful.

Race and ethnicity can be a factor when it comes to hagwons, as blonde haired North American females are seen as the ideal, but that doesn't mean you won't be able to find a job, it just may he slightly more difficult.

My degree is in nutrition and dietetics, I didn't have TEFL or any teaching experience, and I had no problem getting multiple job offers.

Thank you so much for your thorough response. I feel a little better about my situation. I will take your words into consideration as I move forward.

IMO an online TEFL isn't really going to help you out....either get a TEFL with classroom teaching or don't bother.

Yea, you definitely have a chance. You have more qualifications than a lot of people. Korea hires a lot of people right out of school, so you don't need to worry about that. And any teaching experience is a plus.

Scratch that.

If you do not have the funds for a full blown, on site course, there is nothing wrong with taking an online on. Granted, employers will view it as meaningless (sometimes), it will prepare you for the academic side. Not only that, it is a good way to prepare for one that is in site.

Besides, Korea is where the TEFL methods and actual focus on teaching, come to die.

Do as you will OP. If you think it can help, go for it.
